THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1995. From the Minister's Study How much time do you think you have left? By Don Vair, Be'grave John Doe is in the mainstream of life. He has it all it seems, and he wants more. The future looks gloriously bright; why he is in his prime with many years ahead of him, so he thinks. John boards a plane to fly to a faraway destination to close a business deal that will pay off handsomely in financial terms. On route, John experiences an unusual pain but concludes it is nothing to worry about. If it does return, he will see his doctor then. The pain does return and John consults his physician, who in turn gives him the grim news that he has six months to live. John goes into a state of denial, but when reality finally takes hold, John's priorities take on a whole new perspective. Now it is not the million dollars, new car, bigger home etc. that John desires most; no it is simply more time. Among other things, life is a matter of time and we want all we can get of it. It is said that a philosopher at the The service at Blyth United Church Feb. 19 was the seventh Sunday after Epiphany and the seasonal colour is green. Greeters were Cliff and Bev Snell and ushers were Harve Snell and John and Vera Hesselwood. Director of music Phyllis Boak was organist and Erica Clark was pianist. Debbie Root looked after junior congregation and Deb Cook was in charge of the nursery. Rev. Stephen Huntley opened with Call to Worship, Prayer of Approach and words of welcome. This was preceded by the hymn Now Thank We All Our God. The message to the children was about watching the church grow. Rev. Huntley had with him two plants, one was bigger and had more green leaves than the other. He asked them which one they would show to a visitor. "If we water, give it sunshine and On Sunday, Feb. 19, Linda Garland led the worship service, and Thelma Steinman led the congregational singing at Brussels Mennonite Service. Lena Siegers, who returned to Canada from Haiti, after spending a year with the Christian Peace Corps there, spoke on her experiences. She reported that Haiti is a country of poverty and hardship, with five per cent of the people owning everything in Haiti. The Peace Workers were there to observe and to try to cut down on On Sunday, Feb. 19 Virginia Stright was soloist at Auburn Missionary Church. Her singing of Just a Closer Walk with Thee and One Day at a Time Touched Ilearts. Pastor Came's message, "A Good Report," had scripture from Acts 14:.20-27, where it is told that Paul and Barnabas had opened up a new mission field. How did they succeed? In Acts 13 it says the church was saturating them with prayer. No great work is done without lots of prayer, Pastor Came said. Paul and Barnabas were ignited end of his life envisioned himself as standing in a park, with his hat outstretched, asking passersby to drop in their spare minutes, so precious was time to him. I visited a 94-year-old man only days before his death and he recounted to me his days in business and said "I'd do it all over again fora dollar." He wanted more time. The Bible has considerable to say about time. In fact in the book of Ecclesiastes, chapter 3 the writer by the spirit of God says amongst other things, that there is a time to weep and a time to laugh, a time to love and a time to hate, a time of war and a time of peace, a time to get and a time to lose. To begin with however, the writer states there is "A time to be born, and a time to die." The song 0 God Our Help In Ages Past says ''time, like an ever- rolling stream, bears all its sons away, they fly forgotten as a dream dies at the opening day". Think of it, we live and we die and as generations come and go, we are ultimately not even a passing thought, that is except to light," he said, "we can watch it grow." He compared it to the church saying, "If we talk about our church, nurture and take pride in it we can tell others about our growth." Psalm 37 was "Be not wrought up.' The choir anthem was In the Bleak Mid-Winter with Christa Cameron singing solo and Brenda Edgar joining in a duet with Phyllis Boak accompanying on piano. The Old Testament Lesson, from Genesis 45: 3-11 was read by Fred Hakkers. The gospel lesson was from Luke, chapter 6, verses 27-38 read by the minister. Rev. Huntley's sermon was entitled, "Choosing Your Reactions". He said, "We have a choice in choosing our reactions in every day living, regarding events and how people treat us. It should not be tit for tat but we can honour the violence against the poor or any that the Haiti Military considered a threat. The team was expected to document any human rights abuses that they witnessed. The situation has improved in some ways since the American involvement, but the people are even poorer. The generosity of the native people was noteworthy. If a family had food, they were willing to share. The Peace Team struggled to help with local solutions to the local problems, not to merely offer a 'quick fix'. by passion. Passion is a by-product of prayer. The church dies if it doesn't evangelize, for without a vision the people perish. We are saved to serve and the best soul winners are new Christians because they can relate to people who are in the same predicament as they had been. God takes ordinary people and He does marvellous things. Our problem today is that we arc too earth-bound and concerned about temporal things. Paul and Barnabas were endued with power. They had received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost and they were filled with the love of God. God, who created both us and time. It is iinportant to God what we do with the time He has entrusted to us. We are held responsible for it and the decisions we make in time can have enormous eternal consequences. Eternal issues must be dealt with within the framework of time. The Holy Spirit of God works within our hearts to convict us of our sin and our need of Christ as our Saviour and Lord within our lifetime. Our decision for Christ must be made within the few short years we have, for the scriptures say in Hebrews 9:27 "And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgement." How much time do you think you may have left? The Bible says in 2 Corinthians 6:2"...behold now is the accepted time, now is the day of salvation." However long you or I have left, it is but a drop in the ocean, compared to eternity. Time ends, but eternity is forever. Thank God there is time now to confess to God that you are a sinner Jesus' word to love our enemies. No one can make us angry unless we let them. We can choose to be angry, sad or happy." Following the sermon, induction ceremony was held. The stewards inducted were Elmer Sanderson, Garth Walden and David Webster. The new elders inducted were Joan Clark and Deanna Snell. Hymn Tell Out, My Soul was sung. The service concluded with the congregation joining in the choral response, Go Now in Peace. The lovely floral tributes were placed by June Foran, in loving memory of her devoted husband Ron who passed away suddenly last Tuesday, Feb. 14. In the hospital is Molly Grant in Wingham. Baptism is to be held on Mar. 5. For more information contact Rev. Huntley at 523-4224. The Youth Group held a spaghetti supper and a slave auction on Saturday evening as a fund raiser for those going to Wichita this summer. The group was pleased to have raised $1,500 for their cause. The Youth Ministry Team met after the services on Sunday for a planning session. On Tuesday, Feb. 21 the Ladies Fellowship Group will hold the monthly meeting at the church, when they will learn more about Palliative Care Services, in the area. When God cleans us all out then He fills us, Pastor Came said. Just loving is one of the greatest powers on earth. The work of Paul and Barnabas which they had done was multiplied by diffusion. Other missionaries went out spreading the good news of salvation. Every Christian should be a soul winner. The congregation is looking forward with great anticipation to the missions convention from March 5 to 8. Missionaries arc coming from Mexico, Spain, Nigeria and Kenya. They will have exciting stories to share. and receive Christ into your life, as your personal Saviour. How terrible it will be to spend eternity regretting that within time, you did not make this all important decision. God bless you time and time and time again.
