Blyth Novices take thumping The Blyth Novice team has been greatly challenged as it entered its playoff series against the Wallace Township Rep. team. The first game at Blyth on Thursday, Feb. 9 was dominated by Wallace, as they out-performed the home team in every aspect. Wallace opened the scoring halfway through the first period, with an unassisted goal by Justin Russell. Blyth quickly responded as Kirk Stewart took a pass from Cole Stewart and deked it past Wallace's goalie. This duo performed again, only with a switch in roles, as Cole scored with a minute remaining in the first. However, the second and third periods belonged entirely to the visitors as they cranked in eight unanswered goals. The final score was 9-2. The second game was played in Kurtzville on Monday, Feb. 13. Blyth managed only one goal in the second period by Micah Loder with Kirk Stewart assisting. Wallace put in two goals in each period, and pulled ahead with a two game lead in the series. The Wallace squad carries two strong lines only and has solid net- minding by Brady Newbigging and Curtis Birk. To lead their offence, Justin Russell tallied 10 points in the two games, followed by Michael Martin with eight points. Wallace seemed prepared to put Blyth out of the series, as they shot off to a quick start when Michael Martin scored, unassisted, 16 seconds into game three on Thursday, Feb. 16 at Blyth. However, the home team came alive as Cole Stewart laced-in two beautiful goals to put Blyth ahead. Micah Loder and Michael Bean assisted on the goals. Stewart continued to show great offensive leadership as he ripped-in Loder's pass for the hat-trick. Halfway through the second Wallace came back, and Birk scored to pull his team within one goal. Then Tyler Kerr scored the only third period goal to equalize the game. This led to a 10-minute, total goal overtime period. Two and a half minutes into this fourth period, once again Cole Stewart exhibited superb shooting as he found the top corner of the net for his fourth goal of the game. One minute later, Justin Peters cleared his zone to Stewart who passed to Micah Loder who sent in a torpedo shot that blew past Wallace's goalie. Wallace never gave up however, and the excitement mounted as Russell stormed Blyth's net and wrapped in a shot behind his back with two minutes remaining. This goal revived Wallace's spirits especially since a penalty was called on Blyth and they played the remainder of the game short- handed. Blyth's goalie, Eric Jarrett played an outstanding game and faced every challenging shot to end the game as a 5-4 overtime victory for Blyth. The entire Blyth team played with poise and determination. The defensive units performed important roles in keeping plays to the outside corners and protecting the goalie's zone. Michael Bean shadowed Wallace's Russell throughout the . game and impeded him to a single goal and assist. Blyth's centres dug diligently at every faceoff and helped set up plays for their forwards who all worked hard every shift. The fourth game of this series will be played Monday, Feb. 20 at Kurtzville and again, Blyth needs a win to survive. Midgets oust Belmore for title By Rusty Blades • Chances are there will be an early maple syrup season this year. The folks up Belmore way can fully concentrate on this task now that the Blyth Midget Bulldogs have eliminated their Midget team from further playoff action. The Bulldogs won two games last week to capture the WOAA Midget 'E' final series with a three game sweep. The team was then presented the Jean and Jiggs of Liesemer Trophy as WOAA Champions and now battle Embro in OMHA quarter final action, with the series getting started in Blyth this past Monday. After yet another cancelled home game for the Bulldogs on Feb. 13, Belmore finally appeared in Blyth on Feb. 15. The extended layoff did them little good however, as the Bulldogs mauled their visitors 5-2. Peter Craig opened the scoring late in the first period on a nifty backhand with assists to Chad Haggitt and Jonathan Collins. Belmore tied the game five minutes into the second but Craig restored the Bulldog's lead less than one minute later as Tim Cowan set up his blueline bomb. Blyth scored two goals less than one minute apart midway through the second to effectively put the game on ice. A three-way passing play from Chamney to Jason Rutledge to Christopher Howson started the flurry as Howson burned the Belmore goalie. Fifty-two seconds later affiliated player Mark Wilson continued his solid play as he put a centering pass onto the stick of Rutledge, who was left unattended in the slot. Rutledge quickly found the 'top shelf with what he would later describe as his "best shot ever". Bulls advance Continued from page 8 excuse for giving up that seventh goal. We had a chance to take control of the series and we let it slip away. Now it's two out of three and we have to win another game in Hanover." The series continues Friday night in Hanover at 8:30 and then returns to Brussels Sunday night at 7:30. If a fifth game is necessary, it will be back in Hanover but that exact date has not been determined. Exactly halfway through the final period Wilson, who is quickly becoming a crowd favourite, upped the Bulldog's lead to 5-1. He took a clearing pass from goaltender Michael deJong, skated down the left wing boards past everyone, and snapped the puck past an obviously tired Belmore cage keeper. Belmore scored later in the third but Blyth took a commending 2-0 series lead with this 5-2 win. All of the cancelled games altered the playoff game schedule and though Blyth won the coin toss, the WOAA convenor gave game three to Belmore on Friday, Feb. 17. Game four and five, if necessary, were then awarded to Blyth. The Bulldogs travelled to the 'Syrup City' on Feb. 17 and used the shutout goaltending of Michael deJong to propel them to the WOAA Championship, blanking Belmore 4-0. de Jong is the only goalie to show up for a game so far this playoff season, and hopefully his puck-stopping prowess will continue against Embro. A scrappy game in Belmore did little to slow the Bulldogs down as they scored two unanswered goals in both the first and third period for the win. Brad Anderson and Chamney assisted on the opening goal midway through the first as Rutledge surprised the Belmore squad with a quick slapshot. With one and a half minutes left in the period Chamney scored an unassisted shorthanded tally. He surprised everyone as he won a faceoff deep in the Belmore zone, skated behind their net and slipped the puck into the net on a shifty wrap-around. Penalties pretty well killed the second period before the Bulldogs got unleashed again in the third. Mike Salverda and Brian Marks assisted on Wilson's power play goal two and a half minutes into the period as Wilson flipped the puck over a sprawled Belmore goalie. Peter Craig iced the win with two and a half minutes remaining as he took a pass from John Armstrong in his own end, went coast to coast before deking the helpless opposition netminder right out of his jock strap. Belmore's Kelly Schiestel made this series clinching win easier for Blyth with his 'offensive' play.. After taking earlier penalties for slashing, and roughing, and interference, and charging, and elbowing, and roughing he then exploded in the final minutes with a roughing and an elbowing and a five minute kneeing matching penalty to effectively end his 94-95 hockey season. Blyth's discipline and focus helped them to this WOAA Final Series sweep and this will have to continue as they enter OMHA competition against Embro. Blyth opened this series in Blyth on Feb. 20 with game two scheduled for Embro this Saturday. If Blyth win the coin toss for the extra game then game three will be in Blyth on either Sunday, Feb. 26 or Monday, Feb. 27. Stay tuned.
