Corey McKee's overtime goal
gave the Brussels Crusaders a 7-6
win over the Lakeshore
Winterhawks Sunday night at the
BMG arena.
Lakeshore leads the best of seven
quarterfinal series two games to
one with game four in Brussels
Wednesday at 9 p.m. and game five
in Southampton Friday.
Friday night Lakeshore scored
four third period goals enroute to a
6-3 opening game win. Tied at two
with 11 minutes remaining, the
Winterhawks scored four in the
next two minutes for the home ice
victory.
Brian Campbell, Dean Wheeler,
and Corey McKee scored for
Brussels, while Bob Lumley
stopped 28 shots in his Crusader
It took four games but the
Brussels Bulls finally put away the
determined Wiarton Wolves last
week with a convincing 9 - 2
victory. The Bulls won the best of
five series three games to one and
advanced to the semi-finals against
the Hanover Barons.
With Kevin Ball and Murray
Kaye out of the lineup for the
Tuesday night game in Wiarton
because of school commitments,
the Bulls needed some other
players to step up and they did.
Defensive specialist Greg Brown
opened the scoring three minutes
into the game to a pass from Darin
Alviano. Greg McNevan and
Sheldon Mustard also found the net
in the opening 20 minutes before
Wiarton notched a powerplay
marker.
But that was as close as they
would get.
The Bulls broke the game open
with four unanswered goals in the
second when McNevan connected
again while Tim Beyer, Nate
Bender and Mike Brooks also beat
Wolves' netminder Jeff Cook.
In the third, with Wiarton's first
Junior 'C' season quickly coming to
a close, the Wolves thought they
would try to prove how tough they
were by throwing some punches at
some Bulls' helmets. But that
meant a steady stream of penalties
and the Bulls racked up two more
powerplay goals by Mustard and
Mike MacKay.
Coach Scott Pettigrew was
debut.
Lakeshore was assessed five
minors while Brent Vandenakker
sat two minutes for the Crusaders.
Saturday night in Lakeshore the
Winterhawks scored four goals in
six minutes during second period
play for an 8-3 victory.
Tim Fritz with two, and Dean
Wheeler scored for Brussels while
Derek Cooper and Trev Fortune
combined for 39 saves.
Once again the Crusaders were
assessed only one minor penalty
while the Winterhawks sat for 12
minutes.
Sunday night the Crusaders came
from behind to win their first game
of the series.
Trailing 2-1 after one period,
Brussels fell behind by three early
pleased to get by Wiarton, "To win
the series and advance with
everyone relatively healthy is nice.
The Wolves are very physical and
they put up a tough fight."
Three nights later the Bulls
travelled to Hanover optimistic the
team had a chance for its first ever
series win against the Barons. The
Bulls were not intimidated playing
in Hanover's rink and took the early
lead on goals by Ryan Wright and
Darin Alviano. Hanover got one
back before Sheldon Mustard
scored to make it 3 - 1. Brussels let
down its guard late in the period
and the Barons struck twice in less
than a minute to even the score.
Bulls Captain Greg McNevan
scored the lone goal of the second
period but Hanover tied it ceven
minutes into the third period. This
time, however, it was the Barons
who went to sleep and Kevin Ball
and Zack Smith found the net in
less than a minute to restore the
lead for Brussels. Hanover got one
back before Darin Alviano sealed
the victory with a goal with 1:48 to
play.
The 7 - 5 victory gave Brussels
the home Ice advantage in the best
of five series. Ryan Wright had one
of his best games of the season
scoring once 'and setting up four
more.
Sunday the Bulls, a team which
prides itself on its defence and
special teams, came out flat losing
10 - 5. The Bulls gave up two
power-play goals, two shorthanded
in the second. Powerplay goals 30
seconds apart closed the gap but
with less than seven minutes
remaining the game Lakeshore led
6-4.
Jeff McKee's goal with 1:19
remaining forced overtime where at
7:46 Steve Fritz set up Corey
McKee's shot from the point for The
win.
Tom McDonald with two, Dean ,
Wheeler, Dave Murray and Tim
Fritz also scored while Trev
Fortune stopped 45 shots for the
win, including a game saving glove
save early in overtime.
Elsewhere Durham and
Wellesley are tied at one win
apiece, Tavistock leads Shelburne
3-0 and Elora holds a 3-1 series
lead over Milverton.
goals and an empty netter in the
loss plus took a slew of
undisciplined penalties. Brian
Zabel, Alviano, McNevan, Mustard
and Wright scored the goals for
Brussels.
The game was tied 3 - 3 after the
first and it was 6 - 5 after two but
then the roof caved in for the Bulls.
Tyson Staples scored with Hanover
two men short on a breakaway after
a terrible giveaway.

League team took a solid thumping
when Huron Park came to town on
Feb. 18.
The opponents took a quick lead,
scoring four goals in the first,
answered only by a Ken McCrack-
en netter. Chad Cook assisted.
The Belgrave squad was down by
just two at the end of the second,
benefiting from a Garrett Knight
goal. Knight was assisted by Cook
and Justin Campbell.
Though Campbell was able to
bulge the twine, with the aid of
Knight in the final frame, the visi-
tors rack up four more before the
buzzer.
