By Rusty Blades The Blyth Midget Bulldogs had a tougher time battling the elements off the ice than they did on the ice last week as they opened the WOAA Midget 'E' finals against Belmore. After the first game of the series, which was scheduled for Blyth on Feb. 6 was cancelled, the series finally got underway in Belmore on Feb. 7. After a tentative start the Bulldogs quietly gained control and never let their hosts threaten them in a 4-1 series opening victory. With a few of the Midget guns silenced, team management called up Mark Wilson from the Bantams who 'sparked' the Bulldogs to the win. Wilson opened the scoring eight minutes into the match with Ryan Chamney and Brad Anderson gaining the assists. The forechecking pressure of Tim Cowan, John Armstrong and Chad Haggitt provided catalyst for Blyth's second goal as Cowan gave his team a 2-0 lead before the first period had ended. A Blyth powerplay four minutes into the second period resulted in a 3-0 lead as Brian Marks and Mike Salverda set up Chris Stewart's quick snap shot. Blyth successfully killed off some penalty trouble of their own late in the second and early in the The Brussels Novice Rep team travelled to Zurich on Feb. 11 and 12 to compete in a tournament. Brussels scored first in the matchup against Ingersoll, with Rachel Elliott earning the point, assisted by Tyler Campbell. Ingersoll tied the game in the second half of the middle frame, but Brussels was able to net two more before the buzzer. Campbell, assisted by Joel Hem- ingway and Kyle Stephenson notched the first and Robbie McClure netted the second. Campbell and Hemingway added to the tally midway through the third, bringing the score to 5-1 before Ingersoll could put one more past the netminder. On Tuesday, Jan. 25 they took to the ice against Drayton. It was a lot of end-to-end action and a well played game by both teams. During this tournament there is no score kept - Hockey for the fun of it. The second game featured Clifford against Blyth. Again both teams skated with lots of enthusiasm and had a good time. The third and final game was against a very inspired Wallace team in which Blyth had to battle for every inch of the ice they could get. At the conclusion of this game Blyth was presented with individual trophies that really made the players' eyes light up. Special thanks goes out to the Wallace Minor Hockey Association. Also many thanks to Orie Falconer who was picked up from the beginner squad to help us out. third with Belmore unable to mount any kind of sustained pre-sure. When they were able to penetrate the Bulldog's zone puckstopper Michael deJong came up solid in the crease to keep the zero on the scoreboard. Blyth finally put the game out of reach with four and a half minutes left in the game as Marks set up a rushing Wilson in the slot, who one-timed the puck through the Belmore goalie's legs. Belmore finally found the mesh in the final minute as they broke deJong's shutout attempt by completing a perfect 2 on 1 rush. This 4-1 win gave Blyth win number one in this best three out of five final series. Game number two scheduled for Blyth on Saturday was postponed to Sunday evening before being cancelled again. Game two was now scheduled for Feb. 13 with game three scheduled for tonight, Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in Blyth. If necessary, game four goes to Belmore on Friday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m. and game five will be played in Blyth on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. Come visit the dog pound and see Blyth's only unlicensed Bulldogs in action. Don't worry either as their facemasks also work well as a muzzle. Grrrrrr. don Blake earned assists. In the Sunday game, Brussels took on Thamesford and though Hemingway blasted one in the first, their opponent quickly took the lead. The offense was unstoppable in the second, as they slid four past the Brussels goaltender. Brittany Kellington, assisted by Campbell popped in one more in the dying minutes of the third, but the Thamesford team was victori- ous, 5-2. All players had a strong game. Robbie Semple was chosen Brus- sels most valuable player of the tournament. Brussels Novice started the first round of the playoffs on Feb. 14, against Teeswater. On Feb. 11 the team returned to league action against Wingham in Blyth. At 12:43 of the first period Wingham went ahead on a goal by Brad Carter. The stormy weather forced the cancellation of games against the Wiarton Wolves Saturday and Sunday night and almost forced the postponement of Friday's game in Brussels. The Wolves made the trip down from Wiarton but the poor road conditions delayed their arrival to just minutes before the game was supposed to start. However, the referees did not arrive until after 9. It's possible the semifinals may also start this weekend if the quarterfinals wrap up in time. The Bulls will likely miss Brad Beuermann for the rest of the season.
