The most recent statistics show that in 1992, heart disease and stroke accounted for more than 76,000 deaths in Canada. More people died from heart disease and stroke than: • AIDS (56 times more) • lung cancer (5 times more) • on our highways (22 times more) Heart disease and stroke also account for 8 times more female deaths than breast cancer. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario is dedicated to Increasing: • Public awareness of the signs and symptoms of stroke - and what to do about them • The amount of stroke research in the province • Professional education on this important public health issue Know the Signs and Symptoms: • Sudden weakness, numbness and/or tingling of the face, arm or leg • Temporary difficulty or loss of speech, or trouble understanding speech • Sudden loss of vision, particularly in one eye, or double vision • Sudden, severe, unusual headaches • Dizziness, unsteadiness or sudden falls, especially with any of the above signs If you - or someone close to you - experiences these symptoms, seek immediate medical attention. A brain attack is as much a medical emergency as a heart attack. Stroke is Preventable! Know the risk factors and adapt your lifestyle accordingly. Risk factors include: • High blood pressure • Smoking • Age • Physical inactivity • Diabetes • Family history • Previous heart problems • Race The Leading Cause of Death... Forty-one per cent of all female deaths are due to heart disease, diseases of the blood vessels, and stroke. Heart disease and stroke exact a higher toll on women than they do on men: 37% of male deaths are due to cardiovascular diseases. Why? For one thing, women experiencing symptoms of heart or stroke tend to wait too long before seeking help. Dismissing symptoms as "not important" or "not worth bothering the doctor about" mean that many females are much sicker - and older - than their male counterparts by the time they arrive for treatment. The result? As a rule, women tend to receive less aggressive treatment than men and tend to die more frequently than men after a heart attack. What Can You Do? If you're a woman - or concerned about the health of a woman - know the symptoms of heart disease and stroke. Be aware that the symptoms of heart disease are often more difficult to pinpoint and diagnose in women than in men. Signs of Heart Attacks in Women: • Vague chest discomfort; a heaviness, pressure, squeezing, fullness, or burning sensation or a crushing, radiating pain that may begin in the centre of the chest and spread to the neck, jaw or shoulders. • Nausea and vomiting and/or indigestion • Shortness of breath, paleness, sweating or weakness • Feeling of anxiety or fear If you're experiencing any of the symptoms of heart attack or stroke, don't deny them. Tell someone immediately, or call for emergency help. Remember that time is the single more effective way to improving your chances of survival.
