First on this week's new release roster is Natural Born Killers *
(Warner), the latest assault on our senses from director Oliver Stone. The
story, scripted by Quentin Tranantino (Pulp Fiction), follows Micky
(Woody Harrelson) and Mallory (Juliette Lewis) a pair of psychotic
murders who terrorize the American Southwest. The film is actually a
rather heavy-handed and blood-soaked satire on the relationship between
the violence in society and the media. Stone drags out every cinematic
device giving Natural Born Killers the look of someone channel surfmg
through an unending stream of trash television. Nasty! (Rated R - rough
language and explicit violence).
The mock documentary .. And God Spoke ***(Live/MCA), on the other
hand, is the funniest satire of religious movie epics since Monty Python's
The Life of Brian from the late 1970s. This is a sharply written movie that
follows the adventures of two inept filmmakers as they try to make a bible
epic in 90's Hollywood. The result is hilarious and the film within the film
reminds me of the kind of production 1950's shock meister Ed Wood
might have made. After all how can you not like a movie that casts Soupy
Sales as Moses? (Rated R - may offend some although I don't really know
why.)
As far as sexy murder mystery thrillers go, The Color of Night "1/2
(Hollywood) isn't too bad. Bruce Willis plays a New York shrink, haunted
by a patient's suicide, who heads to Los Angeles and becomes involved
with a colleague's group therapy patients after he is murdered. This video
version is director Richard Rush's original cut and includes 15 more
minutes of footage than the recent theatrical release. I enjoyed this film
despite being able to figure out the pay-off before the end. (Rated R -
some rough language and sexual scenes).
Also worth a look is The Enemy Within **1/2 (HBO) a pretty good
remake of Rod Scrling's Seven Days in May. The plot involves a career
military officer who discovers a plot to overthrow the U.S. government.
The able cast includes Forest Whitaker, Sam Waterson, Dana Delany and
Jason Robards. (Not Rated).
The original is available from Paramount Home Video and stars Burt
Lancaster, Kirk Douglas and Fredric March.
Have you ever wondered about those giant statues on the hills of Easter
Island? Well, wonder no more because producer Kevin Costner and
director Kevin Reynolds have given us Rapa Nui *1/2 (Warner) a movie
that manages to turn an interesting premise into nothing more than a silly
love triangle the outcome of which is to be decided by a big race, kind of a
1600's version of The Wide Word of Sports. The cast includes Jason Scott
Lee, Esai Morales and Sandrine Holt. (Rated R - possibly for bad acting).

Senior girls take volleyball championship
GIRLS GO FOR GOLD!!
By Chris Lapp
The senior girls volleyball team
consisted of 14 players: Carey
Elliott, Tara James, Christine Lapp,
Pamela Schneider, Andrea Vanden-
dool, Stephanie Oliver, Hannah
Huizinga, Jennifer Godfrey,
Lynday Haak, Suzie Salverda,
Kristy James, Katie Snell, Mellisa
Snell and Maegan Jarrett.
Our coach was Mr. Al Sanders.
Our team participated in two
tournaments. The first was in St.
Joseph's School on Saturday, Jan.
By Christa Smith and Sarah Exel
Monday was the volleyball
tournament at F.E. Madill. Every-
body enjoyed it because it was a
good experience to meet new
people. The teams developed new
skills as the day went on.
BPS has just started renovations.
Workmen are painting Mr. Hooft-
man's room. A sink and cupboards
are also being put in. The boy's
washroom is getting new tiles on
the floor.
Kindergarten through Grade 6
went skating on Friday, Jan. 27.
Over the last month our school
has piloted the program called
28. We played six man and we
didn't do too well, winning two
games out of five, for which we got
fourth place.
Many thanks to the staff and
students of St. Joseph's School for
hosting the tournament.
Our second tournament was on
Monday, Jan. 30 at Clinton high
school. We played nine man and
had the best two out of three
matches. We went all the way
undefeated, for the gold (first).
On Wednesday, Feb. 1 we had a
pizza party. Mr. Sanders bought
pizza for everyone. It was a lot of
"Families In Motion." It is a
program to show people how to be
actively involved with their family
and family friends. It has been a
great success!
Mrs. Thomas our public health
nurse, introduced the program to
our school. Last Friday we had our
final assembly for this project.
Wendy Martin from the Ark led us
in activities such as Balloon Bad-
minton and Paper skating. It was an
experience we will never forget.
Mrs. Cousins and Grades 1-3
sang Oh Groundhog Won't You
Take a Peek?
Mr. Kemp, Mrs. Uhler and her
fun playing and eating and we all
would like to give a great big
thanks to Mr. Sanders for
everything.
OUR ENVIRONMENT
By Katie Snell
Mrs. Susan Hay spoke to the
primary classes regarding the
environmental issues in Huron
County. She is sponsoring a poster
contest so the students will be able
to illustrate different ways of
conserving our environment.
Everyone enjoyed and learned
very much from Mrs. Hay's visit.
class did a Scottish Dance. They
were great!
The Grey Central skipping team
came and did a wonderful perform-
ance for us. A group of baton
twirlers from our school presented
a routine called Do, Re, Me.
And finally Mr. Teall took us on
a pretend trip across Huron County.
After the assembly everybody
got an apple which Captain Active
(the Medical Officer for Huron
County) presented. Mrs. Thomas
said, "I am so pleased with Brussels
Public School. We exceeded our
goal (which was 452 footprints).
We got 626 which represents 626
hours of physical activities. The co-
operation, enthusiasm and help was
excellent."
Magazine sales kick off assembly
was also on Friday. A representa-
tive from QSP Inc. came and
explained what to do. Sales will
end on Feb. 20.
Grade 7/8 is still waiting for
snow to fall to go on their cross-
country ski trip.
Second term reports are on the
horizon. Students have probably
noticed a lot more tests and
projects.
Did you know that guide dogs do
not possess any unusual powers,
but are highly intelligent animals
specifically trained to react to
commands by the owner?
HITTING THE SLOPES Al'
TALISMAN
By Carey Elliott
The students from Grades 7 and
8 went skiing at Talisman
Mountain Resource on Thursday,
Feb. 2.
Most of them were beginners but
proceeded very well in their ability
to ski. They showed their expertise
as well as their own techniques in
downhill skiing.
They arrived at Talisman around
9 a.m. but had to anxiously wait
until around 11 to get their skis,
boots, and poles. After this the
skiers that had never skied took
their first lesson, get their first
punch.
The more experienced skiers
went right to their test to challenge
their ability.
After this everyone basically
went in their own directions. Some
people were •lucky enough to
receive their two punches and ski
on any hill, while others were
happy with one punch or even
none.
Everyone had a very enjoyable
and exciting day. The weather was
great and ski conditions were the
best. It was an all around great day
for everyone.
We returned to the school at
6 p.m. Tired students went home
and so ended their fabulous day
skiing at Talisman.
