56 years later
After celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary on Jan.
10, Dorothy and Bert Daer of Blyth, say the keys to a long
and happy marriage are spending time together and don't
say something in anger you don't mean.
A honeymoon to remember
Dorothy and Bert Daer of Blyth, remember their winter
honeymoon in London, Ontario in 1939, as unusual
because there was no snow on the ground. The couple
spent many years on a farm until moving to Blyth 21 years
ago.

Compatibility, key to success
The compatibility of the
personalities is obvious with
Dorothy and Bert Daer of Blyth as
they laugh when describing the
attributes which contributed to their
56-year marriage.
Mr. Daer says he has always
been easy to get along with while
his wife quickly adds that that they
have always gotten along well.
"I guess we must, because she
hasn't kicked me out yet," he
laughs.
The couple, wed in Auburn on
Jan. 10, 1939, raised six children
and are now the grandparents to 20
grandchildren and 10 great-
grandchildren.
"We were never ones to go out a
lot, except to a dance occasionally."
says Mrs. Daer. "Especially after
the children arrived. We stayed
home with them."
From a couple whom have spent
the vast majority of their adult lives
together, in each other's company,
comes a few bits of advice to the
young and not-so-young who have
a special someone in their lives.
Both agree that husbands and wives
must remain sociable with one
another, adding that one should not
get mad and say things out of
anger.
Looking back on more than half
a century together, the Daers agree
on two things that can cause a lot of
problems in marri4e, one is not
staying home enough and the other,
more serious, is too much drinking.
These couples' keys to success
and suggestions on behaviour to
avoid may be food for thought as it
comes from more than 86 years of
experience and people who can still
laugh together after so many years.
1995 trend
report
• Something old, something new.
Once upon a time it was taboo for
the groom to see his bride prior to
the wedding ceremony. Today,
that's changed. An emerging trend -
is for the groom to meet with his
bride in wedding attire, just before
the ceremony. They spend a few
emotional moments alone together
and have photos taken before
exchanging vows amidst family
and friends. • Cake toppers take
center stage. They are more
elaborate than ever. Couple choose
ornaments that reflect their
lifestyles and interests--a
commissioned sculpture of the
newly weds on skis; replicas of
Mickey and Minnie; statuettes of
beloved pets, molded in chocolate
and marzipan. The wedding cake
itself is displayed on a special dais
or in a pavilion draped with tulle.
• It's party time! Wedding
ceremonies reach new heights Of
