Charging in
Brussels Bull Chad McCallum puts the pressure on the Wiarton Wolves goalie during Friday
night's first playoff game in the series. While the Bulls were all over the Wolves in this battle, a
self-defeating effort in Wiarton on Sunday that went into double overtime before sending
Brussels home defeated, killed the Bull's advantage.
Bulls split wins with Wiarton
series after jumping out to a 2-0
first period lead on goals by Brian
McNichol and Ryan Wright.
Wiarton pulled to within one with a
powerplay goal four minutes into
the second, but a Bulls' powerplay
goal off the stick of Tim Beyer put
Brussels back in control.
The wheels started to fall off
when defenceman Mike MacKay
made a bad clearing pass and it
bounced off goalie Ryan Fisk into
the Bulls' net. Wiarton then called a
stick measurement on winger Darin
Alviano and were right sending the
Bulls best penalty killer to the box
for two minutes.
Wiarton went ahead 4-3 with two
more powerplay goals dug down to
tie the score with a Nate Bender
goal with one-tenth of a second left
on the clock.
The two clubs played 10 minutes
of sudden death overtime without
scoring and then went to a 20
minute period. The Bulls came out
strong and looked hopeful when
Sheldon Mustard broke in on a
breakaway but a diving Wolves
defenceman knocked the puck
away before he could take a shot.
Wiarton quickly came back and
seconds later Greg Hellyer flipped
a backhand over the shoulder of
goalie Ryan Fisk.
"It was a disappointing game
because I felt we beat ourselves.
We got away from our game plan
and the Wolves took advantage,"
said Coach Pettigrew.
The two teams meet Friday night
in Brussels at 9 and then return to
Wiarton Saturday for a 7:30 game.
If a fifth and deciding game is
required it would be played in
Brussels Sunday afternoon at 4.
In the other two quarterfinal
series, Hanover and Kincardine are
tied at one and Wingham leads
Walkerton two games to none. Mt.
Forest got a first round bye for
finishing first and plays the first
round survivor with the lowest
points.

The Brussels Bulls and the
Wiarton Wolves are tied at one win
each in their best of five Western
Junior C quarterfinal series.
The Bulls opened the series
Friday night with an impressive 6 -
1 win, dominating the expansion
Wolves from the opening faceoff.
Greg McNevan and Peter Ryter
scored in the opening period which
saw the Bulls outshoot Wiarton 19
- 7. Sheldon Mustard made it 3 - 0
on an end to end rush in the second
period. Brian Zabel added two in
the third while McNevan picked up
his second of the night with less
than five minutes to play. Wiarton
did not get on the board until the
third period.
Coach Scott Pettigrew said it was
one of his team's best games of the
season, "We took the body and
forced a lot of turnovers which was
the key for us."

Wiarton it looked like the Bulls

The Belgrave Atom House
League team took on Hensall Jan.

Hensall took a 1-0 lead through
the second period before the home
team could rebound with one miter
in the third.

grave's only goal of the game.
The visitors also popped one in
the third to capture to victory.
The Brussels Atom Houseleague

On Jan. 21 Brussels hosted
Belgrave with Mark Hunter scoring
the lone Brussels goal. Belgrave
scored five.
Goaltending for Brussels was
shared by Matt Elliott and Bryce

Gord Price says they will curl
against 16 other teams and says the
group should have a good shot at
the title this year.
"After placing third last year, we
now know what we are up against
