Country's
blood supply
safe, says
Red Cross
In an effort to alleviate any con-
cerns which Canadians may still
harbour regarding the safety of the
blood supply, the Canadian Red
Cross Society says, it is safer than
ever.
A panel of international experts
has confirmed that the Canadian
supply is as safe as any other devel-
oped country's.
Since the blood supply relies on
volunteer donations, public confi-
dence is essential to maintain sup-
port for the system which provides
blood and blood products to
600,000 people each year.
To ensure safety, the Red Cross
has strict guidelines which must be
followed. They are: every donor
undergoes stringent screening;
every donor must complete a health
assessment questionnaire, be inter-
viewed by trained Red Cross health
personnel and pass a brief physical
examination; all donors are unpaid
volunteers and every unit of blood
is tested for the AIDS viruses, a
rare form of leukemia, Hepatitis B
and C and syphillis.
Once the extensive testing is
completed, any positive or false-
positive blood is destroyed and
records are kept so that the individ-
ual may not donate in the future.
The Canadian Red Cross's prima-
ry commitment is to safety, they
say, operating blood collection,
processing and distribution ads a
humanitarian service to Canadians.
For information regarding the
blood supply or other matters per-
taining to the Red Cross, call 1-
800-668-2866.
