Atom Reps blasts Blyth
Last Wednesday Brussels
travelled to Blyth to round out their
season.
Brussels opened the scoring at
9:21 as Brian Oldfield scored from
Robert Kerr and Nolan Krotz. Two
minutes later Kerr scored from
Krotz and Oldfield.
Andy VanBeek blasted a point
shot at 5:01 on a nice pass from
Krotz, then Phil Affolter let fly
with a point shot from Chris Blake
at the 4:10 mark.
Blyth's Man Anderson scored on
a pass from Nick Courtney at 2:29
of the second. Oldfield got that
goal back with 48 seconds left in
the first.
The only goal of the second came
off the stick of Oldfield with just
seconds left in the period.
Brussels dominated the third
period as Kerr got his second goal
of the game with assists going to
Krotz and Oldfield, then Krotz
scored on a pass from Oldfield.
Brussels' power play struck as
Oldfield scored on a pass from
Krotz and Coulter at 4:12, then
Coulter rounded out the scoring on
a pass from Mark Fischer.
Howick travelled to Brussels
Friday night for game one in
playoff action. Howick opened the
scoring at the 5:45 mark of the first.
Two minutes later Brussels tied
the score as Captain Oldfield
scored on a pass from Krotz and
Coulter.
Brussels took the lead with three
minutes left in the third as Oldfield
slid a shot in the bottom corner
with a nice passing play from Kerr
and Krotz. One minute later
Brussels added to their lead as
Affolter ripped a shot from the
point beating goalie McCann with
assists from Fischer.
There was lots of end to end
action in the third but no scoring.
Saturday saw game number two,
a game that was never in doubt as
Brussels out-skated and out-hustled
the Howick team.
There was one goal in the first
when Krotz scored from Oldfield at
the 4:14 mark, then Krotz scored at
the 11:41 mark of the second on a
pass from Fischer. He completed
his hat trick with 5:48 left in the
second as Kerr and VanBeek drew
assists.
Brussels continued to dominate
in the third. Oldfield scored an
unassisted goal, then at the 5:45
mark, call-up Darrell McClure
went to the net and banged home a
rebound.
Howick broke Matt McCall's
shutout with 2:19 remaining in the
game, then with 1:12 left Affolter
completed the scoring to give
Brussels a 6-1 victory, and
eliminating Howick from further
play.
Brussels will now play Drayton
in the second round of playoffs.
A special thanks for help from
Scott McDonald, Brandon Dixon
and Darrel McClure.
Midgets lack silver touch
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midget Bulldogs
participated in the International
Silver Stick 'C' Finals Tournament
last weekend. They opened their
round-robin grouping with a
convincing 12-0 win against
Cheboygan, Mich. but were later
eliminated with a 6-5 loss to
Watford and a 5-1 set back to
Thedford.
It was a full frontal assault
against Cheboygan on Friday night
as Blyth opened with a 12-0
shellacking of the cocky Yanks.
Blyth scored their goals every
way imaginable, especially in the
second period as they notched six
unanswered goals on their way to
an 8-0 lead after two.
The line of Mike Salverda, Chris
Stewart and Brian Marks led the
Blyth attack. Stewart buried four
pucks in the twine, including a
shorthanded effort, and added a
single assist. Salverda also counted
a shorthanded goal and finished the
game with a pair of goals and a pair
of assists. Marks provided the
playmaking with three assists and
also chipped in with a goal.
Brad Anderson showed the boys
how to score from the blueline as
he drilled home two goals,
including on while Blyth was on
the powerplay.
Additional goals were recorded
by Benjie Hakkers, Chad Haggitt
and Christopher Howson. Addi-
tional game assists were recorded
by Jonathan Collins and Ryan
Chamney with two each while
Peter Craig and Jason Rutledge
added single helpers.
Michael deJong and Chris
Bromley split what little goal-
tending there•was to do as they
shared the shutout in this 12-0
bombing.
Action heated up on Saturday as
Blyth rode an emotional roller
coaster in two bitterly contested
games. It was a see-saw affair
against Watford with a late game
goal deciding this 6-5 game in
Watford's favour.
Watford opened the scoring one
and a half minutes into the game
but Stewart and Greg Toll asqisted
on the equalizer two minutes later
as Salverda scored on a breakaway.
The first period ended 1-1 and
these two evenly matched teams
traded three goals each to end the
second period deadlocked 4-4.
Chamney gave Blyth a 2-1 lead
four minutes into the second as he
was set up in the slot by Howson
and Rutledge. Watford then took a
4-2 lead before Blyth responded
late in the period to tie the game.
Marks assisted on Stewart's power
play goal and then Chamney set up
Rutledge for the equalizer with the
teams playing four skaters aside.
This set the stage for a wild third
frame. Watford took a 5-4 lead
with 6:21 left in the game but their
joy was short lived, when seconds
later Blyth once again tied the
game as Chamney and Rutledge
helped Stewart score his second
power play goal of the game.
Watford scored with one minute
and three seconds left in the game
and Blyth responded with some
spirited play but couldn't send the
game into overtime, although it
wasn't from lack of effort.
This 6-5 loss sent Blyth into their
final game needing a win against
Thedford to advance to the
tournament playoffs. After a
scoreless first frame, Thedford took
a 3-0 lead with the only goals of the
second period. They increased their
lead to 4-0 early in the third before
Blyth broke the goose egg with
nine and a half minutes remaining
in the game.
Hakkers and Howson provided
the forechecking pressure that
allowed Chad Haggitt to bury the
loose puck from the scramble that
ensured. Thedford added a late goal
and eliminated Blyth from further
play with this 5-1 loss.
These two tough games should
help prepare the Midgets for the
upcoming playoffs. Blyth receives
a bye into the WOAA Midget 'E'
finals as they await a winner
between Zurich and Belmore. The
finals should get underway early
next week.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
Former Vancouver Canucks'
goaltender Richard Brodeur, when
asked what Wayne Gretzky does
best: "Make you look bad."
On Sunday, Jan. 22 the Blyth
Bantams won the B side of a
tournament held in Howick Twp.
arena. The team rallied and showed
some of the skills it had been
missing since the Christmas break.
Having all the players back in the
lineup was also a big boost.
The first game against Thedford
was one of the most exciting of the
tournament and brought the fans to
their feet. At the end of three
periods of hard playing, end to end
action, the score was tied 3-3 and
therefore necessitated a five minute
sudden death overtime.
At the end of the overtime it was
still 3-3 and a one-on-one shootout
was required to finally decide a
winner, Two weeks earlier in
Chesley the Blyth boys totally
dominated the shootout. This one
would be a piece of cake eh!
After four rounds against
Thedford Blyth was down by one
and therefore placed on the B side
of eliminations.
The first game was against
Lucknow. At the end of three
periods it was a 4-3 victory for
Blyth allowing a final round
meeting against Clifford. The game
against Lucknow was a close,
rough and tumble game but not one
penalty minute was handed out to
either team. Congratulations to
both.
Every team in a tournament has
visions of going to the A side and
winning it all. It also holds true that
no team likes to go to the B side
and get beaten. So in the game
against Clifford the Blyth boys
came out with a vengeance. They
played a good passing game and in
the first period Jeff Cowan, Kelly
Boven, Jeff Ferguson and Darryl
Bromley, all scored unanswered
goals.
It was the same in the second
period with four unanswered goals
scored by Mark Wilson, Cowan,
who scored two and Bromley for
the hat trick.
In the third period Clifford got on
board in the first minute. The next
nine minutes of the third went
without a goal and the play got a
little sloppy. Wilson then decided
to get serious and scored two
within 38 seconds to also earn a hat.
trick. Clifford answered with
another goal but it was like fighting
a barn fire with a water pistol.
The final score remained at 10-2
for Blyth.
The boys look like they're ready
for their first round of playoffs,
which begin this week with a best
out of five against Wallace. Come
out and enjoy.
