Brussels Atoms take A title
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midgets played a
single game last week as they built
a 7-3 lead before settling for a 7-7
tie against Wingham.
They capitalized on some shaky
Wingham goaltending in building
period leads of 4-1 and 7-3. A
hockey game consists of three
periods however and Wingham
swarmed the locals in the third and
notched the tying goal with just
under two minutes to play in the
game.
The tone of the game was set
early as Jonathan Collins was
credited with the opening goal. A
clearing pass from behind Blyth's
goal line travelled the length of the
ice with the Wingham goalie
fanning on the puck before it slid
into the vacated net.
Ben Craig and Chris Stewart
helped Blyth to a 2-0 lead as Brian
Marks one-timed the puck from the
slot for the goal. Marks counted his
second goal of the game 25 seconds
later with an unassisted marker on a
3 on 0 Blyth breakaway.
Seven minutes into the game
Greg Toll notched his first goal of
the season to give Blyth a 4-0 lead.
Blyth was enjoying a two man
On Tuesday, Jan. 17 Clinton
travelled to Brussels for an
exhibition game.
Just seconds into play Nolan
Krotz snapped a shot past the
Clinton goalie with assists from
Brian (51dfield and Andy VanBeek.
End to end action highlighted the
rest of the period, but no goals were
scored on either side.
In the second Clinton tied the
score then at the 8:47 mark of the
third period Chris Coulter fired
home the winner on an excellent
pass from Phil Affolter and
Stephen Todd. Brussels held on for
the victory.
Friday night Elma-Logan faced
off against the Atoms. Brussels got
the only two goals of the first
period as Oldfield scored on a nice
three-way passing play from Robert
Kerr and Krotz at 9:46. Todd lit up
the score board at 3:37 on a pass
Belgrave blasts
Brussels Atoms
Chad Cook helped lead his Bel-
grave Atoms Houseleague team to
a 10-2 victory over Brussels on Jan.
13, as he scored four times and
added an assist.
The first period ended with the
Belgrave squad taking a four to
zero lead.
Besides two netters by Cook,
goals were scored by Jim Wray and
Justin Campbell, who assisted on
each others blasts.
Campbell earned an assist on a
Cook goal as did Devon Moffatt.
In the second, Moffatt earned a
point, assisted by Cook.
Single-handed efforts went to
Campbell and Cook.
Brussels tried to mount a come-
back, racking up twp goals, but
their attempts were slowed in the
third as the puck refused to cross
the line.
Matthew Bromley and Garrett
Knight joined the scoring ranks, in
the final frame along with Cook.
Assists were earned by Ken
McCracken (2) and Campbell.
The team travelled to Huron Park
the following day to be confronted
with a closer battle.
A trio of Belgrave players com-
bined for all five visitors' tallies.
Campbell and Cook each put a
scratch on the board in the first, but
went into the second tied with the
hometown team.
The line of Cook, Campbell and
Knight mounted a three-man attack
in the second, capturing two more
netters though the frame ended
with a tie at 4-4.
Cook popped in his fourth of the
day, once again assisted by Knight
and Campbell, to take the lead
which would hold to the final
buzzer sounded.
from Blake and Coulter. Elma-
Logan tied the score in the second.
However, Oldfield scored.an
unassisted goal at the 8:38 mark to
give Brussels a 3-2 lead after two
periods. That was as close as Elma-
Logan would come on this game as
the line of Oldfield, Krotz and Kerr
connected twice in two minutes. As
Oldfield collected goal three and
four of the game with assists from
Kerr and Krotz, Nolan Krotz scored
on an end-to-end rush with 6:24 left
in the third. Elma-Logan scored
one more to make the final 6-3 for
the Atom squad.
Sunday Brussels travelled to
Seaforth for the Optimist
tournament. Their first game came
against Bayfield. In the first Krotz
scored with the assist going to
Oldfield. Darryl Houston let a shot
go from the point on a pass from
Oldfield to give Brussels a 2-0 lead
at end.
Krotz scored with 1:02 left in the
second from Todd, then with just
44 seconds remaining Coulter
scored an unassisted goal to give
Brussels a 4-0 lead after two
periods.
There was only one goal in the
third as Stephen Todd scored at the
two minute mark on a nice three-
way pass from Coulter and Blake.
The final score Brussels 5,
Bayfield 0.
A mid afternoon game had
Kincardine face off against the
Brussels squad. There was lots of
end to end action but no scoring
until the 8:34 mark when Krotz
drove one home with assists going
to Kerr and Houston.
The hometown boys scored two
quick goals in the second, the first
when Robert Kerr bulged the twine
on a pass from Krotz and Affolter,
then 20 seconds later Oldfield
scored off a point shot from Marc
Fischer.
This completed the scoring and
advanced Brussels to the A
Championship game with a 3-0
victory.
Brussels faced the London
Thunder. The well matched teams
went back and forth in the first with
no scoring. Brussels struck first in
the second as Captain Oldfield
scored an unassisted goal. Brussels
scored at 2:57 as Kerr fired home
the championship winner on a nice
pass from Nolan Krotz and Brian
Oldfield. This completed the
scoring in the second.
London scored their only goal at
the 9:18 mark of the third. The
Brussels squad shut the door after
this and captured the A Champion-
ship trophy with a 2-1 victory.
Goalie Matt McCall, who only
gave up five goals in five games
and only one goal against in
tournament games gets a well-
deserved pat on the back.
This week's action sees Brussels
open their playoff series against
Howick at 7:30 Friday. Come out
and cheer on the Atoms.
