PAGE 13 Heading into the final weekend of the Western Junior C League's regular season the Brussels Bulls are coming off a very impressive victory on home ice Sunday. The Bulls shutout the number one team in the league, the defending champion Mt. Forest Patriots 3-0. Bulls' coach Scott Pettigrew credited his club's discipline for the victory, "Normally they find a way to get under our skin, but players like Brian Zabel and Brad Gibb kept their cool and it paid off." The Bulls opened the scoring in the first period on the power play. Josh Alexander rushed the puck deep into the zone and found Peter Ryter all alone in front of the net. He made no mistake tucking the puck past Patriot's goalie Tom Clark. Peter Mulder put the Bulls up 2-0 when he jumped on a giveaway by former Listowel Cyclone defence Scan Gawley and slapped it past a surprised Clark. Bulls' goalie Ryan Fisk turned in a strong performance to record the shutout, including a great stop on a breakaway in the middle frame. Bulls' Captain Greg McNevan put the icing on the cake with a third period marker on another Ringers romp over Milverton On Saturday, Jan. 21 the Brussels Tykes had plenty of offence to crush Milverton by a score of 12 - 3. Scoring for Milverton was Cory Legault, Michael Morrison and Cory Gaschod. Coach of the Milverton squad is former Brussels resident Elizabeth (Excl) Gascho. For BrusSels Phillip Wedow provided plenty of offence scoring four with three coming on one shift. Cory Chapman scored first getting an assist from brother Chase Chapman to start the game off right. The Bulls penalty killers had to come up big late in the third period to preserve the shutout. • "It's a big win for us from a confidence stand point heading into the playoffs. We have worked hard to improve our checking and I think it showed today," said Coach Pettigrew. Friday night the Bulls capped their season series with the expansion Kincardine Bulldogs with a perfect 5 - 0 record. Sheldon Mustard led the way with two goals, while Peter Mulder, Brian Zabel, Josh Alexander and Darin Alviano chipped in with singles. Four teams, including the Bulls, do not know yet where they will finish in the Western Junior C League standings. Brussels still has a shot at second but must win both of its remaining games and hope Hanover loses at least one. The Bulls can .finish no lower than third. Walkerton and Wingham are also battling for fourth and it just so happens that is who the Bulls finish the regular season with. Friday night the Bulls travel to Wingham and then Sunday host Walkerton at 2. Regardless of where the Bulls finish, the first game of the playoffs will be Friday, Feb. 3 at 9 against either Wiarton or Kincardine. 40 curlers participate in Brussels bonspiel The Brussels Curling Club hosted a Farmer's Bonspiel on Monday, Jan. 16. There were 40 curlers participating. In first place with 52.2 points was the team of Mike Alexander, Brad Speiran, George Zwep, and Keith Williamson. Second with 50 points was Orval Bauer, Mervyn Bauer, Wayne Lowe and Carman Bernard. Third place with 40.75 points went to the team of Ken Dalton, Neil Beuermann, Val Shortreed and Gary Dauphin, while fourth with 38.5 points was earned by Dan Gascho, Dan Erb, Ron Gerber and Ron Futher. In fifth with 37.25. points was Dave Trafford, Peter Legace, Doug Mercy and Jim Hoy and in sixth was Don Dalton, Lorne Glanville, Brian Alcock and Dan McNichol. The team of Neil McGavin, Gord Pryce, Jim Bosman and Brian McGavin took seventh while in eighth was Rick McDonald, Brad Knight, Jim McDonald and Bill Shortreed. Ninth place went to Don Riehl, Ray Hillebrecht, Norm Jefferson and Bruce Eisle and tenth place was the team of Ross Engel, Lloyd Drummond, Stan Waldie and Isaac Martin. It was excellent goaltending and a strong team effort which took the Brussels N%vices to the A Champi- onship final during the Tara tourna- ment on Jan. 14. The squad started the tournament with tenacity as they blasted their Howick opponents 10-1. Two goals by Tyler Campbell in the first springboarded the players to a four-goal second and two more in the third before the Howick team was able to bulge the twine for their first and only netter. To add insult to injury, the Brus- sels sharpshooters blasted two more in the dying minutes of the game. Second ,period goals were notched by Campbell, Kyle Stephenson, Joel Hemingway and Scott Armstrong. Assists earned during the two frames went to Rachel Elliott (two), Robbie McClure, Nic Campbell, Devin Blake, Brandon Blake and Heming- way. The final frame saw Tyler Camp- bell rack up two unassisted goals and earn the assists on the other two, both scored by Elliott. Nic Campbell also aided the goal-mak- ing play. Coming off the first game high, the team encountered a much tougher Shallow Lake squad. Once again Tyler Campbell The Brussels Crusaders won twice on the road and moved into a sixth place tie with two weekends of hockey remaining in their 1995 schedule. Saturday night Ron Strome enjoyed a five point gartie in leading Brussels to a 6-4 win in Arthur. Linemates Steve Fritz and Torn McDonald each scored twice with Strome and Jeff McKee adding singles. Arthur opened the scoring 15 seconds into the game then rallied for a 3-3 tie with goals at the 19:47 mark of the second and 32 seconds into the third. Tied at four, Tom McDonald scored the winner with 90 seconds remaining in the game, followed by an empty netter by Jeff McKee at 19:21. Derek Cooper took the win with 26 saves while Marty Groulx stopped 42 shots in the Arthur net, including a penalty shot attempt by Tim Fritz. Sunday afternoon Tim Fritz had a two goal, three assist game in played an integral part in the scor- ing, creating an opportunity for Hemingway in the second then adding one of his own just over three minutes later, assisted by Hemingway.' Half way through the third, Shal- low Lake Countered, bringing the, challengers to within one of the Brussels team, but that would be as close as they came. Hemingway sealed the win in a solo effort with 1:04 left on the clock. The 3-1 victory took the home- town team to the finals against Drayton. The opponents struck first, notch- ing three goals in the first. Brussels fought back when Campbell and McClure combined for a marker at the 9:05 point of the leading prussels past the Drayton Comets 9-6. Trailing 3-2 after 20 minutes the Crusaders scored five in the second for a 7-4, lead heading into third period action. Rick Boon ended the games scoring summary with an empty netter with 47 seconds remaining. Brian TenPas also scored twice with singles by Jeff McKee, Dean Wheeler, Steve Fritz and Dave Murray. The Crusaders travel to Milverton Saturday night then return home Sunday to meet the Durham Thundercats at 7:30. Saturday, Feb. 4 the Wiarton Redmen are in town for a 3:30 afternoon start while on Sunday, Feb. 5 at 2 p.m. the Crusaders finish their schedule at home to the Lakeshore Winterhaw,ks. Off-ice happenings include the Clinton Radar and Shelburne Muskies each losing points due to illegal players. The Brussels won- lost record was not affected. second. The second Brussels netter was earned by Hemingway; Campbell getting the assist. The team received great goal- tending throughout the tournament by the duo of Brooklyn Wheeler and Sean Hoegy. Tyler Campbell won the scoring title, having blasted seven past the opposing netminders and adding four assists to his tally.
