"Good Wishes Only"
Wieelfic
By John Schedler
This week features many interesting new releases at your local video
store. Leading off the list is The Mask ***1/2 (Alliance), a highly
enjoyable comedy/fantasy starring rubber faced comedian Jim Carrey.
The plot involves an ancient and magic mask that transforms mild
mannered Stanley 'Ipkiss (Carrey) into a real life animated cartoon
obviously inspired by the films of Tex Avery.
This is a wonderfully goofy, laugh out loud funny movie and those
amazing computer generated special effects by Industrial Light and Magic
blend perfectly with Jim Carrey's manic mugging. (Rated PG)
While you can glimpse some of animator Tex Avery's work in The Mask, many of his wild and wacky cartoons are available on videocassette
in Screwball Classics: Volumes 1 & 2 from MGM/UA.
For those of you who have a laserdisc player, MGM/UA also offers The
Complete Tex Avery a multi disc set featuring every one of his MGM
cartoons which are all uncut and uncensored.
While The Shadow *** (MCA/Universal) wasn't exactly the box office
hit Universal was expecting this past summer, it is none the less one of the
better mystery thrillers I've seen in recent years. Based on the popular
pulp fiction and radio hero from the 1930s, The Shadow stars Alec
Baldwin as the mysterious crime fighter who must save the world from an
arch villian who is a direct descendant of Genghis Kahn.
I really enjoyed The Shadow thanks to its fast paced action and
interesting 30s film noir look and feel. Who knows what evil lurks in the
hearts of men?...the SHADOW knows! (Rated PG-13)
Another first rate new release is Wolf ***1/2 (Columbiaffristar), the
story of a Manhattan book editor bitten by a wolf on a lonely Vermont
road. Jack Nicholson gives a terrific and subtle performance as he turns
into a creature of the night while romancing Michelle Pfeiffer and seeking
revenge on villains Christopher Plummer and James Spader. (Rated R -
some tough language)
The week's only dog, so to speak is True Lies *1/2 (Fox), yet another
loud, overlong, stupid and misogynistic action film starring Arnold
Schwarzcnegger. If I never see another movie starring Arnold or one
directed by James Cameron it will be too soon. (Rated R)
In the Classic movie departMent is a collection of films starring
.Canadian songstress Deanna Durban. With her fresh natural appeal and
lilting soprano voice she almost single handedly kept Universal Pictures
afloat in the late 30s. Still fondly remembered by many to this day,
Deanna Durban received a special Oscar in 1938 and currently lives in
retirement in France.
The titles in this collection include, Three Smart Girls (1936), 100 Men
and a Girl (1938), Three Smart Girls GroW Up (1939) and It Started With
Eve (1941), each selling at S19.95. Maybe if these sell well Universal may
dig further in to their vaults 'and release my favourite Durban film Lady on
a Train 1945, a dandy comedy/murder mystery based on a story by Leslie
Charteris (The Saint) and directed by her third husband Charles David.

Grades 7, 8 do music projects on composers
GRADE 7 AND 8
Grade 7-8 has been working on a
variety of projects. They arc
working on speeches in February.
Grade 8 students have had visits
from Madill Secondary School and
Central Huron Secondary School
with regards to course selections
and destreaming.
Both Grades 7 and 8 are doing
music projects on musicians and
composers.
They would like to take this
opportunity to thank Mrs. Laurie
and Mr. Mason for coaching their
volleyball teams.
INTRAMURAL
VOLLEYBALL
Intramural volleyball playoffs
were held the first two weeks of
January. The top scoring teams the
Hurricanes and the A-Bees were
tied, but were each put out in the
semifinal games.
The Cyclones and the Thunder
were to play a final three-game
match. In the first game the
Thunder was behind 11-4 but
pulled back up to win the game 15
toll.
In the next game, the dark horse
Thunder team again came from
behind and blasted the Cyclones
with a score of 15 - 4. No third
game was needed.
Mrs. Laurie let the teams play
12-a-side volleyball for the rest of
the noon hour.
Competitive teams arc now
practicing for several upcoming
tournaments. Final cuts have been
made for both boys' and girls'
teams.
Mr. Mason has been coaching the
boys through most recesses and
noon hours. The boys will be
playing a six-a-side tournament at
St. Joseph's Separate School on
Saturday, Feb. 4 and a nine-a-side
tournament on Monday, Jan. 30 at
Central Huron Secondary School.
Mrs. Laurie has been coaching
the girls' team after school
practices. She has been organizing
the East Region Volleyball
Tournament for Jan. 30 and details
are pretty well in place now.
The girls' team has been invited
to a six-a-side tournament at St.
Joseph's Separate School on Jan.
28. It should help to get the players
covering the floor for the regionals.
Eight boys are also entering two
teams into the Walkerton Threes-
are-Wild Tournament on Jan. 21.
KINDERGARTEN
Kindergarten A wanted to make
playdough and they had a problem.
They didn't have enough cream of
tartar. They went to Mr. Harrison
and asked his permission to go to
the grocery store. On the way to the
grocery store they went window
shopping at the Mini Mart, M. J.
Sewing, Pharmacy and Carol's
Collectables and many more.
They saw Erin Moore's mom in
the grocery store.

Students
go curling
By Amanda Leger and
Jenny McKercher
The primary and junior classes
have decided to use snow for their
forts. If you looked outside a week
ago and counted we're sure you
would find more than one hundred
forts.
The Grade 7/8 classes will be
going curling on Jan. 17, 24, 31,
Feb. 7. We will be taught how to
curl. The Parents' Assoc. is
sponsoring this for us.
On Jan. 27, there will be a
volleyball tournament at F. E.
Madill. The teams will be made up
of 14 players. There will be
separate boys' and girls' teams.
Mrs. Perrie and Mr. Teall will be
coaching our teams.
Mr. Wanless's class has been
busy doing perspective art. They
wrote their names or initials. They
used all different colours.
Mr. Teall's and Mrs. Uhler's
classes did the similar art. Mrs.
Uhler read them a story and
students painted a winter scene
from the story using green,"white
and black paint on a blue
background.
We recently had a Families in
Motion assembly with Mrs.
Thomas and Captain Active. They
arc encouraging us to get out with
our family and be more active.
When you do an activity with your
family, fill out a footprint and bring
it back to school. Our goal is to get
footprints from one side of the
school and back again. So every-
body out there we encourage you to
get active and have fun!
90th Birthday
When they got back they made
green playdough and gave Mr.
Harrison a lucky cookie for letting
them go to the store.
GRADE 1/2
Grade 1/2 students are learning
about temperature and weather and
are making their own temperature
graphs.
Reading is a favourite activity of
the students. They are really
pleased they can now read a variety
of books independently.
GRADE 6/7
Grade 6/7 is doing a project on
Explorers. Students are working on
speeches which will be said in
February.
Volleyball is starting so many of
the students are trying out to make
the school teams.
GRADE 2/3
We're incubating 16 eggs and
have been checking the calendar to
when the chickens will hatch on
Jan. 23.
We now have new activity
centres in our classroom which
allow us to learn many different
skills, eg. math, games, mancellor -
art African board game played with
stones and science.
Also we've been working on
winter activities and reading lots of
winter stories.
GRADE 5/6
Mrs. Little's Grade 5/6 students
are learning about a fascinating
period of history - the Middle
Ages. So far they've learned about
such things as castles, armor, riches
of nobles, kings and queens.
They've learned about_ the people,
the class levels, knights and
shields.
Some aren't so sure they'd want
to go to school the way they did
years ago. Lessons were grueling,
teachers were nasty and we
considered many acceptable things
done then would be considered
abusive now.
CHESS TIME
The Grade 3/4 class of Blyth
t'ublic School have found a new
activity that is fun and educational
at the same time. They started
taking up chess before Christmas
and play at recess or during free
time. Classmates make up their
own tournaments between each
other to see who can defeat the
other.
Mr. Perrie's Grade 3/4 class has
been working on very interesting
research projects on the subject of
endangered animals. The purpose
of these projects are to teach the
students about certain animals that
are in the risk of becoming a
problem and what's causing the
problem.
"Etre en forme" is a unit in
French on sports and healthy foods
which Mrs. Laurie has been
working on with the Grade 3/4
class. The students seem to really
enjoy the unit.
Now they are working on School
Fair projects by drawing and
labelling a sports figure and his
equipment.
Our thanks to Kerrie Hallahan
our Co-op student for her help in
getting the Blyth Public's School
News to press this week.
