PAGE 9. Crusaders stay mired in 7th By Rusty Blades The Blyth Midgets could best be described as road warriors last week as they took their show on the road for three games. Although they opened with a 3-1 loss in Mitchell they rebounded to squeak out two wins, 6-5 over Brussels and 4-3 in Zurich. Blyth played perhaps one of their best games of the season on Jan. 9 despite losing. Blyth's goaltending tandem of Michael deJong and Chris Bromley once again provided a much needed- spark with some timely saves. Mitchell opened the scoring early in the first but Blyth responded with a goal to tie the contest midway through the first. Jason Rutledge sent Peter Craig and Chris Stewart in on a two-on- one break with Stewart converting Craig's goalmouth pass for the equalizer. Although Mitchell I responded with single goals in the final two period for the win Blyth proved to themselves that they can play with anyone as Mitchell is the strongest Midget team in the area. Blyth travelled to Brussels on Jan. 11 and used two late game powerplay goals to squeak past their hosts. Blyth took a 2-1 first period lead on goals from Christopher Howson, with an assist to Benjie Hakkers, and Rutledge, who was sent in on a breakaway by Peter Craig and Ryan Chamney. The teams traded single second period tallies with Blyth taking a 3-2 lead with 36 seconds left in the period. Mike Salverda swatted in a loose puck in the slot with assists to Chamney and Brad Anderson. A between-periods pep talk did nothing to motivate Blyth as Brussels jumped into a 4-3 lead with two goals in the first 32 seconds of the third period. Brussels added another goal with just 11 minutes to play and had Blyth on the ropes with a 5-3 lead. Blyth responded to the challenge at hand and Rutledge brought his team to within one goal with eight and a half minutes to go. He snapped one upstairs with Howson and Salverda securing their second points of the game with assists. Rutledge tied the game with four and a half minutes left. Benjie Hakkers and Chamney counted the assists on Rutledge's hat-trick goal with Blyth enjoying a two man powerplay. Blyth refused to be satisfied and pressed for the winner. Chris Stewart had the honours of being the hero of the game by scoring with three minutes remaining until the final buzzer. Rutledge and Chamney each earned their fourth points of the game on the goal as Blyth salvaged two points from what just as easily could have been a loss. After some early game jitters, the defence of Craig, Jonathan Collins, Anderson and Greg Toll held off Brussels in the final minutes and secured this 6-5 game for Blyth. The road show continued in Zurich on Jan. 15 where it was the same story as the game against Brussels. Blyth and Zurich traded goals throughout before a late game goal gave Blyth a 4-3 victory. Zurich opened the scoring but Blyth tied the game late in the first as Peter Craig assisted on Howson's equalizer. The teams traded two goals apiece in the second period as the teams skated to a 3-3 stalemate through two periods. Anderson provided the offence with both Blyth goals as Ben Craig assisted on his first. His second goal of the period was an unassisted effort as he intercepted a Zurich clearing pass and buried a waist high point shot through a screen. It was another see-saw battle in the third but Blyth was fortunate enough to get the win as they scored with just over three minutes to go in the game. It was a classic scramble from in close as both John Armstrong and Tim Cowan each had a whack at the puck before Chad 14aggitt swooped in and sifted a backhand shot over the prone Zurich puckstopper. The ending wasn't pretty but the visitors hung on for the 4-3 win to end the week with two wins and one loss in the three road games. The Brussels Crusaders continue to hold seventh place in WOAA Senior Hockey League action with an 8-8-2 record and six games remaining. Friday night the Crusaders won a physical contest in Clinton by a 7-5 score. Two goals in the last 30 seconds of play gave Brussels a 3-2 lead after 20 minutes. They increased their lead to 5-2 midway thru the second period but by early in the third Clinton had rallied for a tie. Steve Fritz scored the winner on the powerplay with seven minutes remaining then added an empty netter with 21 seconds left on the clock. Corey McKee also scored twice with singles from Tom McDonald, The Brussels Bulls had to score three unanswered goals in the third period to tie Wiarton 5-5 on home ice Sunday. A win would have moved Brussels into second place in the Western Junior 'C" Standings, but instead the Bulls remain a point back of Hanover who managed to tie Mt Forest 3-3. Wiarton jumped out to an early lead when Scott Bridge scored a shorthanded goal. Bridge was a pain in the Bulls' side the entire afternoon as he racked up five points. Before the first period had ended Bridge had scored a powerplay goal to put the Wolves up 2-0. The Bulls got on the board in the second period on a strong individual effort by rookie Brian McNichol. It was the Blyth native's first goal of the season. Wiarton, however, increased its lead to 4-1 before Bulls' newcomer Sheldon Mustard scored. Mustard, who was drafted as a 16-year-old by North Bay, has experienced playing with both the Stratford Cullitons and Waterloo Siskins and should be a strong addition down the stretch. Wiarton's Kris Seaman scored a powerplay goal seven minutes into the third period to make it 5-2 but from then on it was all Brussels. Darin Alviano, Murray Kaye and Mustard all scored on the powerplay in a span of two minutes and 10 seconds. The Bulls continued to press for the last nine minutes and despite some great chances could not notch the winner. Bulls coach Scott Pettigrew was happy to escape with a point. "We were sluggish in the first two periods but we dug down when we had to." Some of the Bulls were a little tired after playing with the Junior Continued on page 11 JR C STANDINGS Team GP W L T GF GA PTS Mt. The Crusaders arc on the road for their next three games, Saturday in Arthur, Sunday in Drayton, and the following Saturday in Milverton. Their next home game is in two weeks against the Durham Thundercats. In off-ice happenings Dan Beuermann and JC Hewitt are finished for the year with season ending injuries while Roger Freiburghaus has moved to Dallas Texas to enroll in flying school. As well the Crusaders leading scorer Greg Murray has accepted a try-out with the Columbus Chill of the East Coast League while Pat Cronin has decided not to sign and will remain in rec hockey.
