Brussels Bantam Brett Fischer looks like he means business after checking this Blyth opponent during this home end action at the BMG arena where the two teams faced off last Wednesday night. Despite 20 shots on goal the visitors managed only one point handing their hosts a 12-1 victory. S ports Blyth Atoms' Lee shows great reflexes In front of a standing-room-only crowd at the fifth annual Ed Godin Memorial Hockey Tournament in Chesley, Blyth Bantam goalie Scott Bromley and forward Mark Wilson garnered top honours in the Saturday afternoon shoot-out contest. After 45 minutes of one on one competition, the spectators and members of the 12 competing teams applauded as the two stand- outs accepted their awards. Why even a few of the local Chesley girls were so impressed that they vowed to cheer for the Blyth boys the rest of the weekend. The team however, didn't fare so well in the tournament although the boys did score plenty of goals. On Friday night they played Chatsworth and dropped a 7 to 5 Blyth Tykes take 8-2 loss On Saturday, Jan. 14 the Blyth Tykes hosted Bayfield. The action was fast and furious. At 15:19 at the first period Jeremy Walsh put Bayfield ahead 1-0. Shortly after Walsh scored again to establish a two goal lead, however after battling the defence Darcey Cook tackled a shot in behind the Bayfield net to close the gap, until Bayfield regained the two goal edge on another goal by Walsh. In the second period Bayfield added three more before Cook sent a nifty little pass to a wide open Brett Bean who scored Blyth's second goal of the game. Bayfield would reply with two more goals before the game was through to make it a final 8-2 score. The Blyth team demonstrated a lot of determination and hard work throughout the game. Blyth cut the goals against in half from their last meeting with this same Bayfield squad. Jeffrey Elliott had a brilliant day in the Blyth net as he thwarted several Bayfield chances. Blyth's next game is Saturday. Jan. 21 at 12:35 in Elma-Logan. decision. On Saturday morning they lost to the Thedford Bantams with another 7-5 score. Because of these two losses they were to compete in the Consolation Semi-Finals against the horrwtown Chesley team. In Chesley's two previous games they had scored a total of three goals. With the Bantams scoring 10 in their previous games, it was generally accepted that they should be able to win this game and advance to the final on Sunday. And score goals they did. Midway through the second period they had a 5-2 lead and the odds looked good. It was then that three significant things happened. After Blyth was called for a two minute minor penalty the Chesley team called for a stick check. The stick was bogus so that put two boys in the box and allowed for a 5 on 3. Chesley took advantage and scored. In the early seconds of the third period the Chesley goalie received injuries that forced him to leave the game. They had no back-up goalie so had to dress one of the defencemen. This proved to be a tremendous pump-up for the Chesley team and this goalie was good. The more he stopped the better the Chesley offence played. After drawing another two minute minor the Chesley team called for another stick check and again the stick was ruled illegal, which allowed for another Chesley goal. The final score was 7-6 in favour of Chesley. The boys from both teams shook hands after the game acknowledging each others skills. The Blyth Bantams played three good games of hockey and represented themselves and their town proudly. Awards were presented to Mike Ansley, Mark Wilson and Mike Haggitt for being the team's MVPs in the three games. Congratulations to all. The Blyth Atoms have been busy chalking up wins the past three weeks. The first came against Listowel, which resulted in a score of 5-1. Goals were scored by Justin Rinn and Matt Anderson. The Atoms kept their winning form the very next day defeating Seaforth 7-4. Goals were scored by Anderson, Derek Cook and Rinn. Travelling to Bayfield Jan. 7 the Blyth Atoms defeated the home team 4-1. Goals were scored by Cook and Anderson. Blyth met Seaforth once again Jan. 11 and were victorious with a score of 6-2. Goals were scored by Shaun Henry and Anderson. Lucky Jan. 13 found the Atoms travelling to Zurich in fine form. The result of their efforts ended in a score of 6-1 in their favour. Goals were scored by Martin Sturzen- egger, Michael Bernard, Anderson and Cook. Ryan Lee's "cat-like" reflexes contributed to the team's win by providing great goaltending. Goal assists and superb playing by Rob Archambault, Nick Courtney, Jeremy Hanna, Jeff Carter, Tyler Wilson and Devin Shannon supported the Atoms to crack out the five wins in a row. Their next game is on Wednes- day, Jan. 18 in Blyth at 6 p.m. Come on out and support your local teams. Who needs the NHL?
