The Brussels Bulls moved into second place in the Western Junior C standings on the weekend, but they turned out only to be visiting. The Bulls moved up a spot Friday night when they beat the Walkerton Blackhawks 3 - 2 and Wingham upset the Hanover Barons 5 - 4. But the Bulls finished the weekend back in third after losing to Hanover 3 - 2. It was a see-saw battle in Walkerton with the Hawks taking an early lead but goals by Greg Brown and Greg McNevan put the Bulls up 2 - 1 after 20 minutes. Walkerton tied it in the second setting up the winner by Murray Kaye early in the third period. The 3-2 win was the first time this season the Bulls had beaten the Blackhawks. The victory evens the season series at a one win apiece and two ties. Sunday, the Bulls looked ready when they stormed out of the gate and Peter Ryter scored on a breakaway 16 seconds into the game. But while the bench was celebrating, the Hanover Barons came right back on a goal by Jason Howes only 14 seconds later. Both teams knew at that point it was going to be a struggle for the rest of the afternoon. Hanover went ahead in the second period on a goal by Shawn Widmeyer. The Barons' netminder Jeff Gole was strong in the second, making several key saves including one on Pete Mulder who was left alone in By Rusty Blades The Blyth Midgets battled the weather and a player shortage last week to conduct two games on the ice, splitting a pair at home. The powerplay was the name of the game on Jan. 6 as Seaforth shaded the locals 4 - 3 with all seven goals coming on the man- advantage. Blyth owned the first period, scoring the only goals and building a 3-0 lead. Mike Salverda opened the scoring 42 seconds into the game with defencemen Peter Craig and Brad Anderson earning the assists with some good puck control. Midway through the first Chad Haggitt won a faceoff deep in the Seaforth zone to Anderson, whose shot was redirected in the slot by John Armstrong. . Blyth's final first period pow crplay tally was scored by Peter Craig in the final minute after a heads-up pass from Chris Stewart. Seaforth turned the tables in the second, tearing a page out of Blyth's playbook to score four unanswered powerplay goals of their own. The penalties dried up in the third period with neither team able to bury the biscuit while playing front with an open net but couldn't tuck it home. The killer goal came with just over seven minutes left in the third when Greg Armstrong found the net on a slapshot from the blueline with both teams playing a man short. The Bulls were just about to go on the powerplay for four minutes after Barons' defenceman Paul Harrington knocked Ryan Wright into the boards from behind and received a five minute major. Nate Bender was able to bang a goal home from close range with 2:41 to play but the Bulls could not come up with the equalizer. The loss leaves the Bulls with a record of 13, 7 and 5, one point back of the Barons, but Hanover has a game in hand. With only five games left in the regular season the Bulls have have their work cut out for them if they hope to catch Hanover. _ Brussels native Brad Beuermann missed both weekend games. He broke a finger during the holidays but hopes to return to action on the weekend. Friday night the Bulls will play an exhibition game against the Mitchell Hawks of the Western Junior Development League. Bulls Assistant Coach Charlie Smith will be facing his son, Jeremy, who is a defenceman with the Hawks. The Bulls will meet the Wiarton Wolves Sunday at 2 p.m. in Brussels. five skaters a side. Blyth had plenty of chances to tie the game in the final minutes but the Seaforth puckstopper put on a clinic, using his glove hand to nab four shots that were headed for nothing but twine. Blyth hosted Lucknow on Jan. 7 in a well played exhibition encounter as Blyth's three lines wore down a short-staffed visiting team for a 3-1 win. After a scoreless first frame Ryan Chamney pounced on Jason Rutledge's rebound for a 1-0 lead just into the second. Seven minutes later Peter Craig sent Rutledge in on a two-on-one break. Although Rutledge's shot was stopped, Chamney used good hustle to pounce on the rebound all alone in the slot and drill in a wicked Continued on page 11 The present day Brussels Crusaders scored five unanswered third period goals for an 8 - 2 win over the 1988 Crusaders in their Reunion Game played Friday night. The 95 Crusaders scored the only goal of the first period on a powerplay shot by Karsten Carroll. Blyth PeeWees take Mitchell The Blyth Pee Wee Rep squad travelled to Mitchell Jan. 7 to faceoff against the Mitchell II team. The Blyth team came out skating and led 3-0 at the end of the first period. Kyle Anderson opened the scoring, banking a shot off a Mitchell defender, with Chris Carter picking up the assist. Bryce Toll scored the second goal, finishing off a nifty passing play with Jamie Black and Anderson. Blyth's final goal of the period came as David Ansley deflected a point shot by Darrell McDougall. The second period was in Mitchell's favour as they outhustled Blyth and scored the lone goal to make it 3-1 at the end of two. Blyth got their skating legs back in the third, sealing the victory on Toll's second goal, with assists to Anderson and Tyler Stewart, midway through the period. Jon Kochis and Dean Wilson again provided solid goaltending for the Blyth boys. The Pee Wees next game is Wednesday, Jan. 11 at 7 p.m. in Blyth against Zurich.
