Lewis Stonehouse, a Belgrave
resident for more than half his life,
celebrated his 90th birthday on Jan.
2.
He was born to Robert and
Agnes (Jamieson) in 1905 in a Bel-
grave home he can see from the
front steps of his present home.
At the age of 18, Mr. Stonehouse
ventured out west, where he stayed
for four years.
In 1930, he purchased a farm on
Conc. 8 of East Wawanosh with an
aunt and uncle.
Mr. Stonehouse says he led a
bachelor's life until he met and then
married Helen, his wife of almost
55 years. He looks towards her
with a big smile on his face and a
slight chuckle under his breath.
He spent many years as a farmer
until the couple returned to live in
Belgrave more than 39 years ago.
At that time, Mr. Stonehouse
became employed as a carpenter
while his wife cared for his parents.
Mr. Stonehouse also served as
the treasurer for Knox United
Church for 28 years.
Since his retirement from carpen-
try, Mr. Stonehouse has stayed
busy as a member of the Seniors
Club at the Belgrave Community
Centre and by playing cards with
neighbours and relatives.
The couple says friends and rela-
tives alike have been wonderful,
coming in to play cards when they
couldn't get out and stopping by for
visits.
When asked about the secret to a
long life, Mr. Stonehouse just
smiles, but Mrs. Stonehouse gives
an answer that can be well under-
stood. Her reply; a sense of
humour.
Mr. Stonehouse celebrated his
birthday with an impromptu gather-

gram and symptom relief program
