Fluffy fun
There was lots of sunshine and fluffy fresh snow to make the Families in Motion tobogganing
party down Brussels Lions Park Hill this past Saturday a real fun for all. The program is
geared to getting families active and healthy. It is sponsored by Brussels Public School in co-
operation with the Health Unit.

Firefighters answer false alarm
In an effort to encourage regular
physical activity, Brussels Public
School is participating in the Huron
County Health Unit's "Families in
Motion" project. •
The kick-off for the month long
program was part of an assembly
on Jan. 6 at the school. Grade 7 stu-
dents along with Patty Bennett,
Huron County Director of Educa-,
tion Paul Carroll, Medical Officer
of Health Dr. Maarten Bokhout,
Wendy Martin, Public Health
Nurse Marguerite Thomas and the
Spink family took part in a perfor-
mance to explain the program.
Mrs. Thomas was called upon to
tell Captain Active (Dr. Bokhout)
what Brussels students were plan-
ning. Physical activity, she said, is
any form of exercise that moves
your bodies, your arms and legs for
20-30 minutes. It can be work or
fun, she said.
The youngest student from each
family in the school received a cal-
endar on which they can mark the
physical activities they do. After
three activities have been done
each student returns a footprint
they they were given, to the teach-
er. The footprints are posted and
each scores a point. The goal for
Brussels, Mrs. Thomas told Cap-
There will be no increase in
sewage rates in Brussels, at least
for the present.
At their Jan. 2 meeting council-
lors decided not to increase the
rates by 25 to 50 cents a month,
unless unexpected costs arise dur-
ing the year.
The decision came after council
learned that there will be no modi-
fications to the sewage treatment
plant in 1995. After pressure from
the Ontario Clean Water Agency to
modify the plant to allow greater
sludge storage capacity, council has
been informed the agency has no
funds to carry out the modifica-
tions.
Clerk-Treasurer Donna White
said the current rates provide nearly
$14,000 in revenues a month.
About $12,000 of this must be paid
for operations of the plant leaving
$2,000 a month for a reserve fund
for future repairs (or the modifica-
tain Active is 452 points.
Some of the ideas suggested in
the skit were snowmobiling, walk-
ing, snow baseball and running.
One student, however, said that
their father didn't like to go out in
the cold after dark. The father (Mr.
Carroll) agreed. "I like to sit and
watch TV all evening."
Mrs. Thomas said there were still
many activities that could be done
inside and she called on Ms Ben-
nett, a co-op student from F.E.
Madill to demonstrate some "active
living".
Ms Bennett asked everyone pre-
sent to imagine that it is a typical
snowy winter night and everyone in
the family is watching TV. You
decide you've been sitting long
enough and you want to get mov-
ing," she said. "Well, here's an idea
for an activity that the whole family
can enjoy."
She told the audience to stand
then said they would be taking a
short trip across Canada which
began with an early morning
stretch. This was followed various

things as swimming, paddling,
canoeing, rock climbing and hik-
ing.

would have generated an extra
$1,782 a year while a 50 cent
increase would have meant $3,565
more for the reserve.

Claudia Spink, representing the
parents' association, along with her
daughters Loren and Jessica invited
everyone to attend a tobogganing
party at Lions' Park Hill.
Ms Martin then extended an invi-
tation for a fun night at The Ark on
Jan. 18, while Philip Graber invited
families to take part in a ski event
sponsored by the Leos.
Mrs. Thomas said it is important
to teach children the value of physi-
cal activity and make it an enjoy-
able part of their everyday life.
Statistics show that children today
are up to 40 per cent less active
than they were 30 years ago.
Also, 40 per cent of Canadian
children have at least one risk fac-
tor for heart disease because of
their inactive lifestyle.
The average child, she said,
watches more than 26 hours of TV
and spends up to 30 hours sitting in
school each week.
Finally, 40 per cent of five to
eight year olds in North America
are classified as obese.
"These are alarming statistics,"
she says. "Regular physical activity
benefits us all and is important for
the present and future health and
.vellbeing of our children."
