Members of the Auxiliary to
Wingham and District Hospital
were given the opportunity at their
November meeting to learn more
about improving communication
which is the main job of a speech
pathologist.
Introduced by Marilyn Wood,
speech pathologist Jane Tolton
joined the staff of Wingham and
District Hospital in May of 1993.
Ms Tolton has a case load
consisting mostly of preschool
children. Referrals are made
through a doctor and patients are
placed on a waiting list.
Parents also sit in on sessions
with their child which are an hour
long and on a one-to-one basis. The
parent can then help their child at
home.
Some of the problems might
involve teaching speech skills,
stuttering, swallowing- difficulties,
the hearing impaired and for adults

A $416,877 infrastructure project
has been approved for the Huron-
Perth County Roman Catholic
Separate School board under the
Canada/Ontario Infrastructure
Works programs, Huron-Bruce MP
Paul Steckle, Perth MPP Karen
Haslem, and Board Chair Louise
Martin announced late last month.
The funding, which will be
supported by $83,123 local funds,
will be used to construct an addi-
tion to St. Columban elementary
school, including three classrooms,
change rooms, and a general
purpose room. Work, scheduled to
begin in January and be completed
by August, will create an estimated
238 person-weeks of employment.
"In addition to providing
immediate jobs'for the community,
this infrastructure project
represents a good investment in the
long-term future of the younger
generation because it creates a.
good learning and recreational
environment," said Mr. Stickle.
"The province is pleased to be
working with its federal and local
partners to create local employ-
ment," said Ms Haslam. "The
development of sport and recrea-
tion facilities will enhance the
quality of life for our students and
contribute to the development of
their lifelong interests."
"The board is very happy with
the funding it has received from the
Canada/Ontario Infrastructure
Works program," said Ms Martin.
"It will allow us to upgrade the
facilities at St. Columban by
adding a gym, change rooms and
classrooms, and will provide a
location for use by the community
for recreational and social purposes
as well."
Canada/Ontario Infrastructure
Works is a $2.1 billion shared-cost
program designed to create jobs
through local priority projects
which will improve the province's
infrastructure and therefore its
competitive position. Canada,
Ontario and local partners are each
contributing one-third of the project
funding.
The program, which is expected
to create up to 37,000 direct and
indirect jobs, is a positive example
of the federal, provincial and local
levels of government working co-
operatively to foster economic
development and growth.
