Brussels Bulls end 1994 on fire
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midgets enjoyed an
extended holiday break recently
with only two games scheduled
over the past two weeks. They
made the most of their oppor-
tunities however as they chalked up
two more league wins, shutting out
Elma-Logan 6-0 at home on Dec.
19 and then outclassing Clinton
with a 6-1 road win on Dec. 29.
Blyth had control throughout the
contest against Elma-Logan,
scoring powerplay goals to open
and close the game scoring in the
whitewash. Sandwiched between
these powerplay goals were four
straight goals by Blyth sniper Ryan
Chamney. John Armstrong and
Greg Toll assisted on the opening
goal six seconds into a powerplay
as Chad Haggitt pounced on a
rebound. Chamney gave Blyth a 3-
0 first period lead with two late
goals. Peter Craig assisting on the
first while Jason Rutledge and Brad
Anderson helped on the second
goal.
Chamney put the game away
with two more goals nine seconds
apart in the sixth minute of the
second period, with the teams
playing four skaters a side.
Anderson and Toll provided the
helpers on the first and Rutledge
earned the assist on the goal which
gave Blyth their 5-0 second period
lead.
Benjie Hakkers and Haggitt
assisted on Blyth's final goal with
two minutes remaining in the game.
The Elma-Logan defencemen
watched in awe as Mike Salverda
batted a loose puck out of the air
and swept it past a disillusioned
opposition crease keeper.
Michael deJong went the
distance in the Blyth net as he
earned his second straight shutout
in this 6-0 victory.
The steady goaltending continued
in Clinton on Dec.29 as deJong and
Chris Bromley split the duties, only
allowing a single goal in Blyth's 6-
1 win. The offensive spark was
provided by defenceman Peter
Craig as he assisted on the three
early goals before notching a power
play goal to close out the scoring
with five minutes left in the game.
Anderson and Tim Cowan set up
the opening goal 62 seconds into
the game as Jonathan Collins
pinched in from his blueline
position and slipped the puck
through a maze of legs.
Blyth left little doubt who was
the better team in the second
period, outscoring Clinton 3-1 for a
4-1 lead after two frames.
Rutledge, with assists to Peter
Craig and Chamney, upped the lead
to 2-0 three minutes into the
second. Clinton cut the lead to 2-1
two minutes later but two goals by
Blyth one minute apart late in the
period regained the momentum for
Blyth. Strong forechecking
provided the impetus for these two
tallies with Peter Craig, Armstrong,
Hakkers and Toll providing the
muscle on the goals by Haggitt and
Brian Marks.
Chamney and Peter Craig
assisted on Blyth's fifth goal two
minutes into the third stanza as
Rutledge used Chamney as a decoy
on a two-on-one break and whistled
the disk over the Clinton
netrninder.
Haggitt and Cowan notched their
second points of the game as Peter
Craig closed out the game scoring
with five minutes remaining. With
Blyth enjoying a man-advantage
situation, Craig went deep into the
Clinton zone and tucked the puck
in on a nifty wraparound.
This 6-1 win gives Blyth a league
record of nine wins, no losses and
one tie, but with the toughest part
of their schedule coming up in the
first two weeks of 1995. The boys
are going to have to pick up their
game a notch or two as they play
five games in the first eleven days
of the new year.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK:
Edmonton Oiler forward Kirk
Maltby, who is moving furniture
part-time for $9 an hour. "Now I
understand what my family and
friends have to deal with every
day."
The Brussels Bulls were on fire
in the last month of 1994 and have
moved into third place in the
Western Junior C standings. The
Bulls capped off a busy month with
three games in four days beating
Kincardine and Wingham but
losing to the first place Mt. Forest
Patriots.
Tuesday night, before a large
crowd at the Brussels arena, the
Bulls jumped out to an early 2-0
lead and never looked back on their
way to a 5-2 victory. Nate Bender
paced the offence with two goals
and an assist. Zack Smith added a
powerplay marker while Brian
Zabel and Kevin Ball also chipped
in with singles. The Bulls were
playing some strong two way
hockey in this game allowing the
expansion Bulldogs just five shots
in the first period.
The big test came Thursday
night, again on home ice, when the
Wingham Ironmen came to town.
The two clubs had tied in their last
two meetings and this contest was
another close and exciting affair.
When the final buzzer rang the
Bulls had won the game 2 - 1.
The Brussels Crusaders head into
the All-Star break with a 7-win, 7-
loss, 2-tie record for seventh place
in WOAA Senior Hockey League
action.
Wednesday night the Crusaders
lost in Elora by a 5-3 score. Brian
Campbell opened the scoring while
powerplay goals by Brad Carter
and Ron Strome 21 seconds apart
gave Brussels a 3-0 lead.
Elora replied with two, late in the
second, then scored three un-
answered in the third for the win.
Friday night the Crusaders lost in
Durham to the first place
Thundercats by a 5-2 score. Steve
Fritz opened the scoring in the first
while Brad Carter brought the
Crusaders to within one with seven
minutes remaining in the game.
However, Durham scored 14
seconds later then added another
with 36 seconds showing on the
clock.
The Crusaders' next game is at
home Sunday night at 7:30 p.m.
against the Wiarton Redmen.
As well Tim Fritz, Dave and
Greg Murray will represent the
Crusaders in the annual Senior A
All-Star Game to be played Satur-
day night in Drayton at 7 p.m.
Don't forget the Reunion Game
The Bulls opened the scoring in
the first period when Pete Mulder
connected on a pass from Josh
Alexander. The Ironmen tied it in
the second on a goal by Kyle
Wheeler.
Both Bulls' goalie Ryan Fisk and
Wingham's Adam Skillen made
some key saves in the second
period to keep the score tied.
Alexander was the hero firing on
a spinarama from the slot that
Skillen was screened on.
The victory boosted the Bulls
record to 12-5-5 and extended the
club's unbeaten streak to eight
games.
But the bubble was burst 24
hours later when the club ran into
the Mt. Forest Patriots. The
defending league champions
looked strong beating Brussels 5 -
1 in Mt. Forest. Kevin Ball got the
Bulls only goal.
Bulls Coach Scott Pettigrew was
pleased with his team's
performance, "We were hoping to
begin the new year in second and
we would have if Mt. Forest did
not lose Tuesday to Hanover."
between the present Crusaders and
the 1988 Champion Crusaders
Friday night at 9 p.m. at the
B. M. & G. Arena. Local skaters
returning from the '88 squad
include Ken Higgins, Ken Cousins,
Mike Smith, Dave Stephenson,
Rob and Stew Cardiff and Kevin
Deitner.
Atoms lose
The Belgrave Atoms were nar-
rowly edged by Hensall in an away
game on Dec. 24.
A three goal third period by the
host team helped them to a 4-3 vic-
tory.
Scoring for Belgrave were Chad
Cook and Justin Campbell, with
two. Assists wents to Campbell,
Cook (two) and Jim Wray.
As it stands now the Barons arc
one point ahead of the Bulls while
Wingham and Walkerton have
fallen five off the pace. Mr.
Pettigrew added, "There is going to
be some great hockey played in
January because every game is
crucial down the stretch as
everyone jockeys for a playoff
position."
The Bulls travel to Walkerton
Friday night to play the
Blackhawks who have not played
in almost three weeks. Then
Sunday the Bulls host Hanover in
the two clubs final meeting of the
regular season.
The Bulls lead the season series
three games to one.
Squeezed in between will be the
annual All Star game Saturday
night in Kincardine.
Nate Bender, Tim Beyer and
Ryan Fisk will represent the Bulls
in the annual matchup with the
Junior B Stratford Cullitons.
Defenceman Brandon Alviano
has left the Bulls to try his hand at
division two U.S. University
Hockey in Athens, Ohio. He could
be available for part of the playoffs
depending on how far the Bulls go.
Crusaders take 5-3 loss
