parents and caregivers prepare
children to increase their chances
of surviving a residential fire by
following these helpful fire safety
tips:
1 • Have a working smoke alarm
on every level of your home and in
every sleeping room. Test each
smoke alarm monthly. Change the
batteries at least once per year and
never remove them except when
changing.
2 • Teach your child what the
smoke alarm sounds like and what
to do when it goes off. Plan two
escape routes out of the home and
practice fire drills with the children
until they can escape the home
from every room, specially
bedrooms.
3 • If children are too young to
escape on their own, designate
family members to be responsible
for them. This is also a good plan
to follow for disabled or infirm
family members.
4 • Since most residential fire
deaths occur between 10 p.m. and 6
a.m., practice fire drills at night.
Teach children that fire and smoke
are black, and they won't be able to
see; try practicing a fire drill at
night with all of the lights out.
5 • Explain that in a fire it is
extremely dangerous to stand up
because of the toxic smoke and
intense heat. Teach children to
crawl along the floor to safety.
6 • Teach children to touch doors
before opening them and to use an
alternate exit if the door is hot. If
they exit through the door, teach
them to close it after them: this
could help save other family
members.
7 • Designate a meeting place
outside the house as a tree, street
lamp or neighbour's house. Teach
children never to re-enter a burning
building.
8 • Take children to a local fire
station so they will recognize fire
fighters as sources of help in a fire.
Many fire stations have fire safety
education classes for children.

Chances for survival rise
when safety tips followed
By Bonnie Gropp
There was an excellent turnout to
the Grey Twp. New Year's Day
Levee as 150 showed up to see the
new municipal office and council
chambers.
After the tours were completed at
2:30 p.m. Reeve Leona Armstrong,
Huron-Bruce MP Paul Steckle and
Huron MPP Paul Klopp were piped
to the dais by pipers Don Dunbar,
Mary Thomas and Don Martin, all
Grey Twp. residents.
After extending a welcome
Reeve Armstrong expressed the
gratitude the municipality owed to
the federal and provincial govern-
ments, whose infrastructure fund-
ing enabled council to proceed with
the rebuilding and expansion of the
municipal building.
The exisiting structure was built
on two and a half acres between
1975 and 1976 at a cost of approxi-
mately $76,000. Reeve Armstrong,
who was a member of the council
at that time, said that though the
building had served well, talk of
needed expansion began in the
early 90s. "When we were notified
of the infrastructure funding, we
had the project," she said.
The total cost of the new facility
is about $250,000 with $108,000
coming from the federal and
