The school said goodbye to
Kindergarten teacher Brenda
Vivian who is taking her maternity
leave. She promised to visit as soon
as her baby is born. Her
replacement is Lori Jewitt who is
looking forward to teaching at the
Walton School.
The Grade 3 and 4 classes also
said goodbye to two brothers,
Simon and Erich Lenz. They and
their family will be moving to
beautiful B.C. after Christmas.
They will be missed by a lot of
friends. Good luck and don't forget
to write.
Oh, my!
Blyth Festival Artistic Director Janet Amos reads a Christmas story to Alisha Salverda and
John Battye and the audience at the annual Community Christmas Pageant held last
Saturday night in Memorial Hall. Residents demonstrated their talents of song and dance to
the delight of the large crowd on hand to see a different side of their friends and neighbours.

This week's best new release is The Client ***1/2 (Warner) a highly
enjoyable film version of the John Grisham novel about a young boy
(Brad Renfo) who learns the whereabouts of a murdered U.S. Senator.
Pursued by both an ambitious federal prosecutor (Tommy Lee Jones) and
a mob hit man, the boy turns to a savvy female lawyer (Susan Sarandon)
to protect him and his family. This is an excellent and intelligent thriller
which benefits greatly from having a good novel as its source. (Rated PG-
13)
The western spoof, Wagons East .** (Live/MCA) is the late John
Candy's last film. The plot involves a group of settlers who hire boozy
wagon master (Candy) to guide them back east. Problems arise though as
they try to survive Indian attacks, hired guns and themselves. I wish I
could say Wagons East is a funny and fitting tribute to John Candy's
career, but that just wouldn't be the truth. (Rated PG-13). A much better
John Candy film is the bittersweet Planes, Trains and Automobiles ***1/2
(Paramount) which co-stars Steve Martin. (Rated R - some rough
language)
To the surprise of many, Bruce Brown's 1966 surfing odyssey The
Endless Summer was highly entertaining and a box office hit as well, so
now almost 25 years later there is a sequel. Endless Summer II **1/2
(Alliance) features basically the same plot as the original film, two guys
searching for the perfect wave at various locations around the world.
While this may sound a bit dull, especially if you're not a surfer, this
combination of sun, sand, salt water and giant waves works and is a funny
and quite enjoyable movie. (Rated PG)
Among the otiier new and unpreviewed releases for your holiday
viewing pleasure is Lassie (Paramount) the ever popular collie, who this
time out helps a family settle a dispute with their neighbours. (Rated PG)
More canine adventures can be found in Sherlock: Undercover Dog
(Columbia/Tristar) as two children team up with a police dog in an effort
to round up a bumbling gang of smugglers. (Rated PG)
Those loveable little animated dinosaurs are back in the made for video
The Land Before Time II (MCA/Universal - $22.95), a sequel to the
popular original film. The adventure follows the group as they leave their
peaceful valley to explore the forbidden Mysterious Beyond (Rated G)
Available December 27th. In the comedy Tammy and the T-Rex (C/FP), a
young man wakes up to discover he has been transformed into a dinosaur.
(Rated PG-13)
A great new video that deals with a subject a little closer to home is
Ghosts of the Bay **** (Lynx Images - $49.95), a feature length program
about the history of Georgian Bay. This entertaining and informative film
is told through present day exploration, archival film and photographs,
animation, storytelling and interviews with Georgian Bay oldtimcrs. The
video is packaged with a 300 page guide book featuring 50 maps and
covering 140 sites plus stories of mystery and intrigue. Ghosts of the Bay
is well worth checking out and is available at many area book stores. You
can receive further information by calling Lynx Images at (416) 777-9333.
