Brussels Tykes take loss The Brussels L'll Ringers lost a hard fought game to visiting Monkton by a mere 1-0. Excellent goal tending al both ends of the rink proved to be the show stopper in this contest. Brent Wheeler played an excellent game in net for Brussels allowing only one goal. Because of Brussels' overpowering offence in the previous meetings with Monkton, Monkton brought in a novice goaltender which shut down the Brussels sharpshooters. Brussels outplayed the visiting squad but just couldn't slip it behind the opposing nctmindcr. Matthew White, Adam McClure, Adam Corbett, Scott Phillips, and Chris Corbett all played very determined having several chances on various breakaways. The rest of the Brussels squad played a very light checking defensive game holding off their attacks. L’ll Ringers next game will be at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 28 against Belgrave in Brussels. Blyth shaded Clinton 5-3 at home on Dec. 12, then travelled to Mitchell on Dec. 13 where Michael de Jong earned his second shutout of the season in blanking Mitchell II5-0. Against Clinton, Blyth cruised to a 5-1 lead before Clinton made the score respectable with two late goals in an almost penalty-free game. Mike Salverda on a scramble, with assists to Ben Craig and Jonathan Collins, and Chris Stewart, unassisted, gave Blyth a 2-0 lead after the first period. Jason Rutledge increased the lead to 3-0, three minutes into the second, one-timing Ryan Chamney's centering pass into the net while Blyth was enjoying a man-advantage. Although Clinton got on the scoreboard midway through the period, Brian Marks restored Blyth's three goal lead before the period ended, with assists credited to Rutledge and Christopher Howson. Chamney, with help from Rutledge and Peter Craig, increased the lead to 5-1 with five minutes remaining in the game. Blyth relaxed their defensive game and Clinton made the score respectable with two more goals. The Midgets travelled to Mitchell the next evening. They played down to the level of their opposition, only playing well enough to win, albeit by a 5-0 whitewash. Blyth notched all the goals they'd need in the final minutes of the first period, building a 3-0 lead. Stewart opened the game scoring with a one-timer as Marks and Peter Craig picked up the assists. Chamney won a faceoff deep in the Blyth zone to Collins who fed a streaking Rutledge at centre ice who doubled the score on a partial breakaway with a perfect clearing pass. Peter Craig and Chad Haggitt assisted on a Blyth powerplay goal in the final minute of the period as John Armstrong tucked the puck in from the comer. Two more goals, 40 seconds apart in the final two minutes of the second period completed the game scoring. Haggitt and Collins secured their second assists of the game as Benjie Hakkers upped the score to 4-0. Forty seconds later, Stewart notched his second goal of the game with Peter Craig and Tim Cowan earning the helpers on the play. The teams played through a scoreless third frame and the final buzzer provided a welcome relief to this lacklustre affair. The Midgets missed the circus that left Mitchell after a weekend performance although they did encounter the two clowns that were left behind. Foster Brooks would have been proud of their routine. Everyone noticed the strong influence in their act of perhaps the two greatest clown teachers that ever lived, those being Ron Bacardi and Captain Morgan. They didn't discriminate either as they boisterously heckled the Blyth team, the referees, as well as their own Mitchell players. Fortunately the game ended without incident and deJong was perfect as Blyth's last line of defence in this 5-0 shutout. Quote of the week: Wayne Gretzky speaking to his All-Stars before the last game of their European tour. Team member Russ Courtnell has a reputation for partying. "OK, the curfew is midnight, unless that's too early. Then it's 1 a.m. But for you Russ, there's a $100 fine if you're in your room before 5 a.m." Novices9 Hemingway knocks in 2 The Brussels Novice Rep team missed a close one in Clinton on Saturday, losing to the host team by a score of 4-3. Tyler Campbell slipped one between the posts in the first to fin ish that period in a one-all tie. A power play advantage didn't help as a scoreless second for the visitors put Clinton ahead by one. The hosts managed to hang onto the lead despite a close third peri od, with each team scoring two. Joel Hemingway earned both the Brussels shots, with Devon Blake getting an assist on the first one.
