Grey plans New Year’s Levee The inaugural meeting of the 1994-97 Grey Township was held on Dec. 5. Council endorsed a resolution from the County_ of Huron expressing concern with the lack of municipal election coverage on CKNX TV and CKNX radio. Reeve Leona Armstrong and Clerk-Treasurer Brad Knight were appointed as the Grey Township representatives to a county committee to review planning fees. Council authorized for payment general accounts totalling $359,230.02, drain accounts Eastern Star hosts Gr. Officers In November the Clinton Order of the Eastern Star co-hosted with Blue Water Chapter, Goderich when they had as special guests the musical number by Roxie Adams, Grand Officers of the Grand Chapter of Ontario and their escorts. After a delicious dinner the regular meeting was held with Clinton WM Doreen Carter and WP Gordon Steepe in charge, assisted by Goderich WM Helen Westbrook and WP Charlie Adams. totalling $5,597.90 and road accounts totalling $38,297.26. Proposals were reviewed from three firms to supply window coverings for the council chamber. The proposal of Draper Knight of $553.91 plus taxes was accepted. Council accepted the quote of K.A. Hammond Ltd. of $1,458.40 plus taxes for new office furniture. The Hammond quote was the lowest of two received. Council decided that an open house of the expanded/renovated municipal building would be held in conjunction with a New Year's Day Levee starting at 2 p.m. When the meeting closed it was a time of fun and entertainment. A monologue by Beryl McDonald, Helen Westbrook and Don Symons and puppet show with Hilda Bell and Trish Currie taking part, were enjoyed by all. The Christmas turkey draw was held on Dec. 1, and the winners were: Donna Shaddick, Londes- boro; Brian Ball, Kincardine; and Remy Riehl of Bayfield. By John Schedler Leading off the week's new releases is / Love Trouble ***1/2 (Touchstone), a dandy romantic adventure about two rival Chicago newspaper columnists played by Julia Roberts and Nick Nolte out to- scoop each other on a big story. While the plot trods a well wom path, the chemistry between the two stars is good and makes for an enjoyable couple of hours of viewing. (Rated PG) As a big fan of the original 1950s television show, I must say I was looking forward to the new updated movie version of Maverick ** (Warner) which is now available on video. Unfortunately, like the year's other so-called epic western Wyatt Earp, this one also suffers from a running time that is far too long for the material. Mel Gibson goofs his way through the movie trying to come up with enough cash to enter a high-skates poker game while endeavouring to out smart a beautiful fellow gambler played by Jodie Foster. James Gamer also shows up as a mysterious lawman, but neither he nor the decent supporting cast can hide the fact that there isn't an original plot twist in this bloated and dull film. (Rated PG) When Blown Away ** (MGM/UA) opened in theatres this past summer against the blockbuster hit Speed, it was just that, blown away! The plot involves' an IRA defector (Jeff Bridges) who now defuses bombs for the Boston police department and a radical IRA bomber (Tommy Lee Jones) who is looking for revenge. The film does have its share of big explosions, but you have to sit through an overly contrived and tedious story to see them. (Rated R) Among the week's other new, but unpreviewed releases is Baby's Day Out (Fox) a slapstick comedy about three kidnappers who lose a baby they are holding for ransom when he crawls away from them. This is another John (Yawn) Hughes film. (Rated PG) Richard Harris and Barbara Hershey star in the made for TV Biblical epic Abraham (Tumor) about a man called on by God to prove his faith by sacrificing the life of his son. (Unrated) The plot of Oblivion (Full Moon) finds a savage reptilian alien terrorizing an old west town. Oblivion picked up the Gold Award for best fantasy/horror film at the Huston International Film Festival. (Rated PG- 13) In Ernest Goes to School (C/FP) two scientists increase Ernest's IQ with the help of a Sub-Atomic Brain Accelerator. Too bad they couldn't have used this device on some of the script writers currently working in Hollywood. (Rated PG) In the classic movie department is Call Northside 777 *** (Fox - $24.95) an excellent suspense-filled drama starring James Stewart as a reporter trying to prove the innocence of a wrongly convicted killer. (Unrated) For those of you still looking for something for the children on your gift list the folks at Disney have just released Winnie The Pooh and Christmas Too ($16.99) a delightful tape base on the A. A. Milne character. | Video IS BROUGHT TO YOU By""I J.R.'S GAS BAR & TAKE OUT LTD.
