Once again overage right winger Brian Zabel Midgets swamp Brussels By Rusty Blades The Blyth Midgets played a single league contest last week as they hosted Brussels. Blyth's defence was decimated by injuries but several forwards-filled in admirably. The remaining forwards stiH displayed enough firepower to swamp their visitors 7-1. Blyth opened the scoring with two special team goals late in the first period. While enjoying a power play Mike Salverda drilled a point shot through a maze of players and into the net, ably assisted by John Armstrong and Beg Craig. Before the period expired Armstrong earned his second assist on Ryan Chamney's short-handed goal, which also came on a shot from the blueline. Blyth increased their lead to 4-0 early in the period two. Both came from close range as Chamney, with help from Chad Haggitt, and then Chris Stewart on a powerplay, on a set up from Salverda, did the damage. Bulls Coach Scott Pettigrew said special teams were strong in both victories. "We scored seven power play goals and only gave up one. We are moving the puck around well on the power play and I think we have two or three of the top penalty killers in the league." The Bulls are now off until Sunday afternoon when they have a rematch against the Wolves at 2 p.m. in Brussels. frame as Mike Dauphin provided the theatrics. Blyth responded with the final three goals to ice away the victory. Brian Marks assisted on Brad Anderson's goal as Anderson skated in from the point and slipped the puck past the embattled Brussels' goaltender. Christopher Howson set up Salverda's second goal of the game and then late in the game Salverda recorded his fourth point with an assist on Chad Haggitt's goal from a scramble at the edge of the crease. Although Brussels played with emotion, they were no match for Blyth. Michael deJong and Chris Bromley stopped all but one shot in their 7-1 backstopping of another Midget win. Quote of the Week: Former major league manager Yogi Berra, when asked what size of hat he wanted at spring training: "I don't know. I'm not in shape yet." This reminds me of an unnamed Midget player who carries two different sized helmets in his equipment bag.
