The Blyth Festival Singers are preparing for a Christmas Celebration on Sunday, Dec. 11 at Wesley Willis United Church, Clinton. The 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. performances will feature seasonal music including Bach's Christmas Oratorio. Here, from right, Ken deBoer of Lucknow, Paul Zurbrigg of Goderich, George Ribey of Seaforth, Paul Howe of Goderich and Bill Farnell of Wingham run through the score. The Blyth Festival Singers includes more than 60 members. (Shelley McPhee Haist photo) By John Schedler The only new videocassette release really worth checking out this week is Widow's Peak *** 1/2 (Alliance), a sly and engaging Irish comedy starring Mia Farrow, Natasha Richardson and Joan Plowright. Set in the 1920s the plot fmds a small remote village thrown into turmoil when a sexy English woman moves to the community, titillating the locals with rumours and scandalous behaviour. Widow's Peak is first rate and I highly recommend it. (Rated PG) With Christmas just around the comer here are some suggestions for the film and music buffs on your gift list. Western fans may like the five volume The Best of the Real West series from A&E Home Video. This documentary hosted by Kenny Rogers covers such subjects as Sitting Bull and the Sioux Nation, the Texas Rangers, the Battle of the Alamo, Wild Bill Hicock and Wild Women, Calamity Jane, Belle Starr, Annie Oakley. The complete set sells for $99.95. Just in case you missed the Aug. 12 to 14 concert in upstate New York Woodstock '94 is now available on cassette from Polygram Video for under $25. In addition to the onstage bands this almost three hour documentary also features exclusive interviews and backstage coverage. Polygram also has The Statler Brothers: We Love What We Do ($12.95), their first video in over a decade produced to celebrate the group's 30 years together. Republic Pictures is offering The British Sterling Collection which consists of numerous titles from across the pond. Each film in this package is bargain priced at $9.98 and includes The Colditz Story (1957) starring John Mills and Eric Portman, I Am A Dancer (1973) with Rudolf Nureyev and Margot Fonteyn, Billy Liar (1963) starring Tom Courtenay and Julie Christie, Britannia Hospital (1982) with Malcolm McDowell, Scott of the Antarctic (1948) with John Mills and the comedy The Belles of St. Trinian's (1955) starring Alastair Sim. For laserdisc fans the latest title to be added to the Criterion Collection is an absolutely stunning edition of Silence of the Lambs *♦**, only the third film in movie history to sweep the top five Oscars (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, Best Actor and Best Actress). This newly mastered widescreen digital transfer uses the THX system for both video and sound and is fully approved by director Jonathan Demme. As well, a feature only available on the laserdisc format is a second audio track devoted to a running commentary by the director, stars Jodie Foster and Anthony Hopkins, screenwriter Ted Tally and FBI serial-killer tracker John Douglas. Also included are six deleted scenes and numerous other extras. While this disc carries a hefty price tag here in Canada (around $140) film buffs will still find it irresistible. (Rated R) Watch for these new releases coming in the new year. Disney's The Lion King will be available on March 3 for $26.99 and the year's box office giant Forrest Gump is scheduled for release on April 28 al $26.99. One of the most sublime pieces of music ever written, Handel's, Messiah will be performed by the Mennonite Mass Choir on Dec. 15, 16 and 17. The Centre In The Square's large stage and excellent acoustics are a perfect setting for the more than 400 voices in this massed choir. William H. Janzen will direct the choir, the K.W. Symphony and acclaimed soloists Stephanie Kramer, soprano; Lori Klassen, alto; Dennis Giesbrecht, tenor and Victor Engbrecht, bass. Handel's Messiah masterfully sets to music various texts of the Old and New Testaments. In three parts Handel speaks of the coming of Christ; his suffering and death; and his resurrection. Passages such as "For Unto Us A Child Is Bom", "He Shall Feed His Flock", and the Hallelujah chorus make this a truly moving musical experience. Just imagine the Hallelujah chorus sung by over 400 voices! Tickets are available by visiting or calling The Centre In The Square box office. I video ‘f.fZL.-X.
