Advent is a season of waiting for the festival of the Lord's birth. Advent means "coming" or "arrival", a four-week period of preparation and anticipa tion. Stores may flood us with the sights and sounds of Christmas but our worship proclaims that the time is coming, but is not here yet. We must wait. Greeting the worshippers for the second Sunday of Advent were Terry and Barb Richmond. Ushers were Faye Bolger, Fred Howson, Steve Bearss and Candice Howson. Director of music Phyllis Boak was organist and Erica Clark was pianist. Rev. Stephen Huntley opened the service with call to worship, followed by words of welcome. The second Advent candle - peace was lit by Lance and Melanie Bearss and family. 1 Am the Light of the World was sung accom panied by Rev. Huntley on guitar and Erica Clark on piano. For the children's time Rev. Huntley asked if they ever heard the word "Advent". He had a suitcase filled with articles and asked each child to take one out. There was a candle, a big bird sluffed toy, an apple, can of pop, Christmas card and two wooden hearts. He told the children each article was in preparation for Christmas. That is what advent means - preparing and getting ready for the birth of baby Jesus. The choir anthem was Little Drummer Boy. The Old Testament lesson was from Malachi 3: 1-4, read by Fred Howson. The Gospel lesson, from Luke 3: 1-6, was read by the minister. Rev. Huntley's sermon was on the Advent series, the topic being, "Paths to Christmas". He said, "We sometimes blame or shame others instead of taking responsibility for ourselves. The path to Christmas is a straight path. That is what the advent is all about; time to take inventory of our thoughts and not miss the true meaning of Christmas." Lenora Davidson gave the Minute for Missions. She said, Native congregation have been part of the United Church of Canada for years, being small churches, they need help with hydro bills and many other things. Gifts to the Mission and Services Fund helps them with some of their expenses. Commissioning and Benediction was preceded by the closing hymn, Sing Them Over Again To Me. The poinsettia was placed in memory of Earl Caldwell, by his grandchildren, Lorna, Randy, Joe and Cathy. White Gift Sunday is Dec. 11. Celebrate Christmas with area churches.
