The annual event was hosted by the Blyth Legion. Lee, Blyth’s tourney MVP THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 7, 1994. PAGE 21. This past weekend the Blyth Atoms headed to Zurich to play in their annual Atom hockey tournament. Blyth's first game was against a strong Parkhill team. The action was fast and furious and although Blyth "never said die" they were defeated by a score of 7-2. Blyth's goals were scored by team captain Matt Anderson. Strong goal tending from Ryan Lee "Leaky", kept the score respectable. The second game of the tournament for the undaunted Blyth team pitted them against the host team. Blyth came out strong with the end result being a 4-1 win. The first goal, was scored unassisted by Anderson. Derek Cook poked the puck between the Zurich defence to Jeremy Hanna, who successfully deked the Zurich goalie to ring up the second goal of the first period. Blyth Tykes, Novices face defeats The Blyth Tykes have faced some tough competition lately and suffered three defeats as they met teams from Goderich, Seaforth and Wingham on Nov. 26, 27 and Dec. 3. Illness has plagued and depleted the team so they played short handed each game. Every player continues to contribute 100 per cent, and with all the extra ice time, skating and stick handling skills are developing rapidly as the season progresses. Beginners on the team, Kendall Whitfield, Blake Hesselwood and Tony Bean are fitting in fine. Kendall likes to keep herself open for passes, while Tony and Blake dive into the middle of the play. The oldtimers, Brett Bean and Luke Anderson, can often be seen playing a strong defensive role or on the breakaway. Luke especially likes to take sweeping turns to build up momentum to charge into opposition territory. Thirty-two-year-old Geoff Ward had committed to be the head instructor at the Brussels Bulls Christmas hockey school several weeks ago. When the OHL Rangers Zurich scored the second to tighten the point spread in he second, then late in the third period Cook and Anderson each notched a goal to clinch the game and send Blyth to the B final game on Sunday against Wellesley. Sunday's game was a real nailbiter. The first 13 seconds of the game caught the Blyth team sleeping while the Wellesley forwards launched a successful full frontal assault on net minder Ryan Lee to notch their first goal. Leaky Lee's awesome saves kept Blyth in the game as Wellesley stormed the Blyth net endlessly. The second period closed with another Wellesley goal to put Blyth behind by two. Anderson, assisted by Tyler Wilson and Justin Rinn, scored halfway through the third period. Other numerous attempts by the Blyth team were shut out by the Wellesley goalie and the game into another zone, while Darcey Cook and Josh Albrechtas perform nice stick handling and skating maneuvers. Jeff Elliott, Nick Packer and Chris Bernard complement the team by adapting from forwards to defencemen position. Each game has had a different netminder, which gives an added dimension of excitement for the players. Every player is showing great perseverance and good sportsmanship, as they leave the ice respectfully with smiles on their tired faces. The next game will be in Hensail on Dec. 10, as the team strives to record a victory on the scoresheet. NOVICE The Blyth Novice team has lost two tough games, as they hosted Zurich on Nov. 24 and Mitchell 2 on Dec. 1.
