The Mt. Forest Patriots goalie is on his guard as the puck goes sailing past him chased by
one of the Brussels Bulls. The two teams met on Sunday in Brussels and the host team gave
the first place Patriots a run for their money taking them to a 3-3 tie.
Bulls tie 1st place Patriots
The Brussels Bulls played their
best game in weeks almost pulling
off a major upset in the Western
Junior C League, tieing the Mt.
Forest Patriots, Sunday, 3-3. Earlier
in the season the Bulls were
embarrassed by the defending
champions 10-0.
The Bulls came out flying and
carried the play for much of the
first period but a pass between two
Brussels' defencemen hit the back
of the net and goalie Ryan Fisk lost
sight of it. That allowed the
Patriots' Rob Kirk to tuck the puck
in the open cage.
The Bulls bounced back in the

second period on a pair of goals by
veteran Nate Bender, whose first
goal came on a nifty backhand that
fooled Patriot's goalie Tom Clark.
The second marker saw Bender
going to the net on the powerplay
and connecting on a rebound, but
Mt. Forest took the lead on goals
by Jeff Rahn and Todd Davis.
A determined effort in the third
period, especially some strong
penalty killing by Greg Brown,
Darin Alviano, Greg Fritz, and
Murray Kaye, kept a powerful Mt.
Forest team from any further
scoring. That set the stage for
defenceman Zack Smith who got
their second game. Goderich scored
in the first minute of play but Blyth
tied it near the end of the second.
Early in the third Blyth got a goal
from Jeremy VanAmersfoort and
held on to win 2-1. Blyth's other
goal was scored by Kyle Anderson
with assists going to Darryl
Postma, two; Anderson and Darrell
McDougall.
Blyth then moved on to the final
against a tough Ripley squad. Blyth
stayed close, trailing 4-2 midway
through the third period, however
Ripley scored three times in the
the equalizer for Brussels. Fritz and
Brad Beuermann picked up assists.
The Bulls have now tied four of
their last six games and sport a
record of 6-5-5. The Bulls trail
third place Wingham and
Walkerton by two points, but have
played four fewer games than the
Blackhawks and one less than the
Ironmen.
A tough weekend is coming up
for the Bulls. The club will make a
trip to Hanover to play the second
place Barons Friday night and then
it's off to Wiarton Saturday to play
the Wolves. Wiarton returns to

up 3 more
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midgets chalked up
three more victories recently as
they whipped St. Marys II 6-1 in
exhibition play before surviving a
9-7 game against Zurich and
clawing their way past Wingham 6-
3 in league play.
Against St. Marys II, Nov. 21,
Blyth broke open a close game with
four unanswered third period goals
to outdistance their rivals 6-1.
Brian Marks deflected Jason
Rutledge's shot while on a power
play in the first and then Chris
Stewart scored on a solo rush to
open the second period for a 2-1
Blyth lead after two.
Ryan Chamney opened and
closed the third period scoring with
linemates Rutledge and Christopher
Howson assisting on both. In
between Jonathan Collins scored a
short handed marker off a nice
give-and-go with Benjie Hakkers,
then shortly after, Chad Haggitt
snapped the puck in for a 5-1 lead
with Chamney setting him up.
It was a coach's nightmare on
Nov. 28 at home as both teams
forgot defence in a wild 9-7 Blyth
win over Zurich.
The team emerged relatively
unscathed although goaltender
Chris Bromley is still contemplat
ing suing his defence over lack of
support. The teams traded goals
throughout with Blyth faltering
early in the third as Zurich rallied
to tie the game 7-7. Once again,
Blyth responded to the challenge to
score two late goals for the margin
of victory.
The scoring was spread out
evenly as Haggitt, John Armstrong
and Chris Stewart each picked up a
pair of goals with Howson, Brad
Anderson and Mike Salverda
notching singles. Marks led the
team in the playmaking department
as he contributed four valuable
assists. Additional game assists
went to Salverda, with two,
Anderson, Haggitt, Stewart and
Hakkers.
The Midgets completed their ice
oddessy in Wingham on Dec. 4

with a 6-3 triumph, outscoring their
hosts 2-1 in each period. Marks tied
the game with a low drive from just
inside the blueline after a nice
clearing pass from Collins. Peter
Craig and Howson assisted on the
go-ahead goal before the first
period expired as Chamney drilled
the puck into the top shelf.
Stewart, with an assist to
Salverda, rifled one in early in
period two to give Blyth a 3-1 lead.
After Wingham cut the lead to 3-
2 with a short handed goal,
Rutledge restored Blyth's two goal
cushion late in the period with help
from linemates Howson and
Chamney.
Midway through the third
Salverda after a clearing pass from
goalie Michael de Jong, gave Blyth
a 5-2 lead as he skated down the
left wing boards and drilled the
puck past the helpless Wingham
crease keeper. Howson assisted on
Blyth's sixth goal as Rutledge
provided the thrills with some nifty
dekes. Wingham scored in the
dying seconds of the game as Blyth
recorded a 6-3 win.
