Maitland Trail Association, many
people arc learning about and
enjoying the natural environment of
the Mailland River Valley. The
Association was formed in 1975 to
establish a hiking trail along the
Maitland River. Working with
private landowners, this volunteer
organization has developed a trail
from Goderich to Auburn. The
Association maintains the trail and
runs special events to promote

to develop and sustain tourism
within Huron County.
His presentation focused on what
he called his "Top Ten Critical
Success Factors":
- Start with a decision;
- High quality/value;
- Convenience;
- Perceived as being unique or
special;
- Customer service;
- Community support and
involvement;
- Sustainability;
- Commitment and capability
within organization;
- Partnering and packaging;
- Ready, set go...!
Micheline Notte, treasurer,
reported on a successful first year.
The association had some very
good events during the year: the
Brochure Swap; Familiarization
(Fam) Tour; Car Rally and Group
Tour Manual, all which covered
their costs and then some. Initial
start-up costs (letterhead,
envelopes, insurance, etc.) were
aided by a Community Futures
Grant.
John McHenry gave a summary
of accomplishments that the Huron
Tourism Association had achieved
throughout the year. These include
obtaining the start-up Community
Futures Grant as well as
development of a corporate logo
and slogan; the 5th Annual
Tourism Event and Brochure Swap;
the Huron County Group Tour
Manual; a Familiarization (Fam)
Tour; the Huron County Restaurant
Menu Book; attendance at the
London Free Press Travel Show;
co-operative advertising ventures;
host to five Ontario Travel Centre
Counsellors from Toronto, Sarnia
and Windsor; a Car Rally and the
beginning of Strategic Planning.
Kathy Nichol, vice president,
gave a brief outline of action plans
for the 1994/95 season, which
include the 6th Tourism Event and
Brochure Swap; a Familiarization
(Fam) Tour; the development of a
Huron County "Passport" and
Man pleads guilty to impaired
Ambassador Programme; a photo
contest; Co-operative advertising
and trade shows. Long-range plans
include a special events poster and
a Huron Maple Festival.
Nomination chairman, Mr.
McHenry, then commenced with
the business of proposing the slate
of nominees for the 1994/95 board
of directors. The nominees were
elected as proposed: president,
Kathy Nichol (Benmiller Inn);
vice-president, John McHenry
(Huron Country Playhouse);
treasurer, Micheline Notte
(Micheline's Jewellery Boutique,
Bayfield); secretary, Mike Pullen
(County of Huron); Brian Treble
(North Huron Community •-
Development Area, Wingham);
Harold Siberry (Bayfield Cottage
Colony & Marina); Mary Turf ord
(Maple Leaf Motel, Goderich);
Cindy Fisher (County of Huron);
Joan Cassidy (Brentwood on the
Beach, St. Joseph) and Vanda
McNeil (Heather Holme Farms).
The mandate of this association
is to develop and target cost-
effective and result-oriented
tourism strategies within Huron
County. Being a membership-based
action organization and not just
another interest committee,
members have equal input into
association business and are able to
voice their ideas and concerns at
monthly meetings held on the first
Thursday at various members'
establishments.
