The conservation efforts of a community group and six individuals were recognized al a meeting of the Maitland Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) held in Wroxeter on Nov. 16. Conservation Award Certificates were presented to the Maitland Trail Association, Tony and Julie Emond of Elma Township, Glen Warwick of Bluevale, Don Eadie of Turn berry Township, Marlin Pronk of Minto Township and the World Watchers Nature Club al the Lucknow Public School. "The goal of the MVCA is to conserve watershed soil and water resources," said MVCA Vice-Chair Ivan Suggitt. "We could never accomplish this goal without the co-operation, assistance, and support of individuals and groups such as these. The MVCA appreciates their efforts." Through the efforts of the Maitland Trail Association, many people arc learning about and enjoying the natural environment of the Mailland River Valley. The Association was formed in 1975 to establish a hiking trail along the Maitland River. Working with private landowners, this volunteer organization has developed a trail from Goderich to Auburn. The Association maintains the trail and runs special events to promote hiking, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. Fifty tourism-related business people attended the 1st Annual General Meeting of the Huron Tourism Association on Nov. 3 at the Benmiller Inn. Everyone was welcomed by Benmiller Innkeeper Kathy Nichol and the association's President Richard Fitoussi who then introduced the evening's guest speaker, Rob Merwin from the Ministry of Culture, Tourism and Recreation. Mr. Merwin gave an informative speech on tourism partnerships and what is important to develop and sustain tourism within Huron County. His presentation focused on what he called his "Top Ten Critical Success Factors": - Start with a decision; - High quality/value; - Convenience; - Perceived as being unique or special; - Customer service; - Community support and involvement; - Sustainability; - Commitment and capability within organization; - Partnering and packaging; - Ready, set go...! Micheline Notte, treasurer, reported on a successful first year. The association had some very good events during the year: the Brochure Swap; Familiarization (Fam) Tour; Car Rally and Group Tour Manual, all which covered their costs and then some. Initial start-up costs (letterhead, envelopes, insurance, etc.) were aided by a Community Futures Grant. John McHenry gave a summary of accomplishments that the Huron Tourism Association had achieved throughout the year. These include obtaining the start-up Community Futures Grant as well as development of a corporate logo and slogan; the 5th Annual Tourism Event and Brochure Swap; the Huron County Group Tour Manual; a Familiarization (Fam) Tour; the Huron County Restaurant Menu Book; attendance at the London Free Press Travel Show; co-operative advertising ventures; host to five Ontario Travel Centre Counsellors from Toronto, Sarnia and Windsor; a Car Rally and the beginning of Strategic Planning. Kathy Nichol, vice president, gave a brief outline of action plans for the 1994/95 season, which include the 6th Tourism Event and Brochure Swap; a Familiarization (Fam) Tour; the development of a Huron County "Passport" and Man pleads guilty to impaired Ambassador Programme; a photo contest; Co-operative advertising and trade shows. Long-range plans include a special events poster and a Huron Maple Festival. Nomination chairman, Mr. McHenry, then commenced with the business of proposing the slate of nominees for the 1994/95 board of directors. The nominees were elected as proposed: president, Kathy Nichol (Benmiller Inn); vice-president, John McHenry (Huron Country Playhouse); treasurer, Micheline Notte (Micheline's Jewellery Boutique, Bayfield); secretary, Mike Pullen (County of Huron); Brian Treble (North Huron Community •- Development Area, Wingham); Harold Siberry (Bayfield Cottage Colony & Marina); Mary Turf ord (Maple Leaf Motel, Goderich); Cindy Fisher (County of Huron); Joan Cassidy (Brentwood on the Beach, St. Joseph) and Vanda McNeil (Heather Holme Farms). The mandate of this association is to develop and target cost- effective and result-oriented tourism strategies within Huron County. Being a membership-based action organization and not just another interest committee, members have equal input into association business and are able to voice their ideas and concerns at monthly meetings held on the first Thursday at various members' establishments. A 54-year-old Blyth man, who pled guilty in Goderich court Nov. 7 to driving while impaired was fined $1,500 and received a two year driving prhobition. Douglas McDougall was charged in Clinton in May after police saw a vehicle moving slowly towards the edge of town, weaving slightly. Mr. McDougall has two prior convictions, both outside the five- year limit judges use when sentenc­ ing people. He was also placed on one year's probation. Arsonist fined A Brussels resident appeared in Goderich court Nov. 7 on charges of arson. Glen Kimbaucr, 50, pled guilty to setting fire to a McKillop Twp bam on July 10. Court was told that the arson was a result of Mr. Kim- bauer's wish to "gel even" with his former spouse. Mr. Kimbaucr received a $1,000 fine and one year probation.
