UCW hears of Wake Tiyo
The Auburn UCW November
meeting was held on Nov. 21 at 8
p.m. Ethel Ball welcomed all and
the meeting opened with the
singing of In Christ There is No
East or West.
Scriptures were read and Elva
Armstrong led in prayer. She then
spoke on love, something that we
all have and use and must practice
in our daily lives. Wonderful Love
was then sung.
Ethel introduced the guest
speaker Mrs. Shirley McAllister, a
member of the Presbytery advisory
committee for thb London
Conference, who told of a special
project at the village of Wake Tiyo,
Ethiopia. The project is in co
operation with the Ethiopian
Orthodox Church.
The men of the village have
formed into groups to make
decisions and work together at the
project. The homes have been
approved, nurseries started and
trees planted.
The rapid growth is amazing, she
said. A deep well had been dug but
there was no way to get to the
needed water. London Conference
supplied a pump and diesel motor.
This meant good water for daily
use and even some for irrigation.
Later electricity came to the well
which made it more economical. A
new water tank has been made a
grinding mill installed.
A young man, who has been
trained in health, administers drugs
and vaccines. Malaria has been
lowered greatly.
They also have a young midwife
and a picture of her in uniform with
her equipment was shown.
Obstetrical deaths have been
reduced. The young women
recently delivered triplets, one
stillborn but the other two are doing
well.
A building has been made into a
three room school. Clothing and
shoes are badly needed for the
children. The villagers have reason
to be proud of the many changes
accomplished in the past four years.
Elva thanked Mrs. McAllister.
President, Joyce Bean chaired the
business portion and the reports
were given.
An invitation was extended from
Londesboro UCW to a pot luck
dinner on Monday, Dec. 5 at 6:50
p.m. This was accepted. Auburn,
will supply a musical number.
Maxine Seers will purchase the
Christmas flowers for the church-
Lillian Hallam offered to do the
decorating and Maxine Seers will
assist her.
Ann Vincent told about the UCW
lunch and brunch cook books'
which are for sale at $12. She also
will have fruit baskets by an
International exchange group
available for $20.
The Sunday School pageant will
be Dec. 11 with carol singing on
Dec. 21.
Next year Lillian Hallam will be
the president and the nominating
committee will see about a first
vice president. Grace was sung and
lunch was served by Ethel Ball and
Elva Armstrong.
Rev. Ross tells
new ‘old’ story
Rev. Paul Ross led the service at
Knox United Church and Nancy
Park was organist. The invitation to
worship was read alternately and
the opening chorus sung. Rev. Ross
gave the Prayers of Approach and
Confession.
Wise Men Seeking Jesus was
sung. Rev. Ross told the children's
story and the Advent candle, the
candle of peace was lit. The
children's chorus followed. O Come

"New Meaning for an Old, Old
Story." The offering was received
