Brussels PS news Students get progress reports By Trevor Wilson and Kevin Mutter The school sent home the progress reports on Wednesday, Nov. 30. The reports have changed since previous years. The inter­ mediate format groups subjects according to an Ontario education document called "Common Curriculum." They are grouped into the following categories: the Arts including Drama, Dance, Music, and Visual Arts, Language which includes Reading, Writing, Listening, Speaking and French. Math, Science and Technology and Self and Society includes Family Studies, Geography, History, Health and Physical Education. The reports have been typed on computer for the first time for the following classes Kindergarten, 4, 5-6, 7-8. All the classes had a P.A. Day on Friday due to parent­ teacher conferences. On Nov. 30 the Parents’ Association organized a pizza day for the whole school. We would like to thank the Parents' Association and J.R.'s for making so many pizzas. They made about $250. The annual book fair was held from Nov. 21 to Nov. 25. The total sales were $996. From that the school got 40 new books and $175 to buy new books. Grade 7 and 8 students visited Tech 21 for the third time on Nov. 25. There is a draw for $100 at the end of the year. To get into that draw you have to work the hardest and be selected by the teachers at the end of each day. So far the people that are in the draw are Trevor Wilson, Christine Yoon, Joel Kellington, Matt Cameron, Nathan Garland and Amy Ross. The primary grades are perform­ ing a concert on Dec. 13 at 7:30. The theme is "The Wonderful World of Christmas." The junior choir is singing in a Christmas concert on Sunday, Dec. 11 with the Blyth Festival Singers at Wesley Willis Church in Clinton at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available at the school. Young artists win Legion contest By Sandra Josling The Brussels Legion had Brussels Public School and Grey Central participate in the Remembrance Day Poster and Poetry contest. The following is a list of winners in each category: poetry - Crystal Semple and Leslie Baillie (Grey Central); coloured posters, Grade 4-6 - Konrad Hammel (Grey), Christie Snider (Grey), Tricia Teeft (Brussels); posters black and white, Grades 4-6 - Katie Kuepfer (Grey), Garry Hiusser (Grey); posters colour, Grades 7-8 - Stephanie Patch; posters black and white, Grades 7-8 - Mandie Sellers (Brussels), Christa Smith (Brussels), Jenny McKercher (Brussels). Thanks to all the entrants for participating. The Brussels Legion participated in the Zone C-l singles darts. The Brussels players well represented the branch with four players qualifying for district. Bob Richardson placed first with Steve Cockram second. Ernie Haycock placed fourth and Eric Ross sixth. Congratulations and good luck in District. : The Fraternal members played euchre on Nov. 26. The team of Lloyd Glanville, Willis Knight, Ernie Back and Neil Adams captured the first place trophy for the branch. Good playing. On Friday, Dec. 16 the Brussels Legion is having a Christmas Hoedown. If you enjoy jamming with the gang, singing, or listening to good music be sure to drop by the Branch. The fun will begin at 9 p.m. The New Year's Even pot luck dance tickets are available at the Branch. There is a limited amount of tickets to be sold. Tickets are $5/person. Tanya Franken of Brussels won the Auburn Co-op award for Reserve Champion 4-H Dairy Calf at the Seaforth Fair. Brussels Fire department moves into new hall People Barbara Brown formerly from Brussels, attended The Citizen's annual shareholder's meeting. She was able to visit friends and neighbours from the area. She was on overnight guest with Bob and After years of suffering with a dilapidated old building, Brussels Fire Department moved into its shiny new fire hall last Wednesday. Donna White, village clerk-trea- surer, reported to the inaugural meeting of village council Monday night that an inspection of the building had showed only a few deficiencies left to fix up so the move had been made. There will still be no sewers to the building until a line can be built in the spring. Meanwhile the old fire hall will remain unheated for the winter and pipes will be drained by village staff. Council agreed to accept an offer to rent the space in the old building for storage for the winter providing the renters pay for the insurance on their property and the village not be responsible. Muriel Hart. Alfred Knight is now a patient in Wingham and District Hospital. He is wished a speedy recovery. Recycling pickup changes Beginning in the new year recy­ cled materials will be picked up only every two weeks in Brussels. Village Clerk-Treasurer Donna White told councillors Monday night that the suggestion had come from Don Carter of Carter Waste Brussels council briefs Brussels will be putting a foot on the electronic highway in February, at least for the delivery of cable TV signals. Village council received a letter al its Monday night session saying that Ward Cable TV will be having its cable signals sent to Brussels by fibre optic cable beginning Feb. 1. It will mean that the satellite dishes currently located behind the old fire hall will be removed.
