DHC names first Mental Health Planner The Huron Perth District Health Council Chair Jeff Wilbee, has announced the hiring of the council’s first employee. George Stock of the Tavistock area has been hired on a one-year contract to fill the position of mental health planner. In this new role, Mr. Stock will work with and assist council's Mental Health Implementation Committee, chaired by Terry Fadelie, chief executive officer of St. Marys Memorial Hospital, in planning and co-ordinating mental health services throughout Huron and Perth Counties. The work of the mental health planner is part of the provincial mental health reform strategy with the objective of providing more community-based services oriented and directed to the needs of consumers. Recently, the Minister of Health postponed further financial restraints on provincial psychiatric hospitals until there are adequate community services in place. Consultations with consumers and their families, service providers and other members of the community, will be necessary to identify local mental health needs and develop the strategy to effectively address them. A dairy farmer and community activist, Mr. Stock brings to the role over 20 years of volunteer leadership and rural community development experience in Ontario, Alberta and Saskatchewan. He was chair of the Ontario Cream Producers' Marketing Board from 1986 to 1990 and worked for the Oxford County Branch of the Canadian Mental Health Association in Woodstock from 1992 to 1994. Mr. Stock started his duties on Oct. 31. He currently works out of the Canadian Mental Health Association, Perth County, office in Stratford. It is expected that he will move into the District Health Council offices when they are established in Mitchell. I would like to thank the Ratepayers of Grey Township who supported me in the polls on November 14.
