"I only had 2 or 3 drinks.
It's not like I'm a criminal or something”
Famous last words about drinking, driving, insurance and the law.
• "I don't have to provide a breath sample."
Yes you do. Or face a fine and/or Imprisonment.
• "I won’t lose my licence if it's my first time.
Yes you will, for a minimum of one year.
• "As long as I’m under the legal limit, I'm okay."
Not necessarily. The police can suspend your license for 12 hours on the spot even if your blood
alcohol concentration is as low as .05%.
• "If I’m caught, I’ll just switch Insurance companies."
It won't help. Insurance companies will check your record. And they'll all charge the same rate to insure you.
• "My insurance will cover it.”
No it won't. If you have an accident while impaired, your insurance company has no obligation to cover your legal
fees, court costs, the loss of your vehicle or any judgement against you.
• "It’s not as if I’m a criminal...”
Yes you are, under federal law, if you're convicted of impaired driving. A conviction will give you a criminal record.

Let's say you're convicted of impaired driving, but nothing gets damaged and
nobody gets hurt. So it's no big deal, right?
Maybe. But welcome to five years on the bus.
For at least the first year, you won't have a licence at all. And after that, you’re
looking at some hefty insurance premiums.
Say you're 19, you've had a clean record, and you've been paying about $2,800. a
year to insure your vehicle. After you get your licence back, your insurance will
jump to about $11,200. a year for two years, than drop to $6,100. for a further two
before you're eligible for regular rates again.
If you pay, you'll end up spending an extra $23,000. In premiums. That’s roughly
the cost of a university education -- or a big chunk of a new car.
But unless you're Independently wealthy, you’ll likely be picking up your dates on
the bus for the next five years.
