Doon celebrates Christmas
A Grand tale for Christmas
Paul Ledoux's stage adaptation of
The Secret Garden, one of the most
famous children's books of all time,
comes to The Grand just in time for
the holiday season. Because of
popular demand, the performance
schedule of The Secret Garden has
already been extended! The show
now runs from Nov. 29 until Dec.
24.
Since its publication in 1911,
Frances Hodgson Burnett's story of
the orphaned Mary Lennox and her
discovery of the hidden garden, has
captured the hearts of readers of all
ages. This stage adaptation of the
perennial favourite is sure to
delight all who see it!
Eleven-year-old Maggie Blake,
who portrayed Helen Keller in last
season's production of The Miracle
Worker, plays Mary. Twelve-year-
old Aidan De Salaiz, who will be
remembered by Grand audiences as
Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol, is
Colin, the cousin Mary helps get
well, aided by the young gardener,
Dickon, who has a special rapport
with the natural world. Dickson is
being played by Eric Wolfe, who
also appeared in A Christmas Carol
and returns later this season in
Broadway Bound. Colin's father,
Lord Archibald Craven, is played
by The Grand’s Artistic Associate
Charlie Tomlinson.
Also on the staff at Misselthwaitc
Manor, the Yorkshire estate of the
Cravens, are former Grand Artistic
Director Bernard Hopkins as
gardener Ben Weatherstaff, Brigitte
Robinson as housekeeper Mrs.
Medlock, and Kate Hennig as
Dickon's sister, the chambermaid
Martha.

The village is decked out in its
Christmas finery as Doon Heritage
Crossroads prepares to celebrate
the holiday season with Country
Christmas on Sundays, Dec. 4, 11
and 18 from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. The
cedar garlands have been hung with
care and the precious ornaments
carefully unwrapped and placed on
the Christmas trees, ready for that
very special day.
At the turn of the century,
Christmas was indeed a special
time - concerts and pageants in the
schools and churches, families
bundling into their horse-drawn
sleighs to visit friends and relatives
and the celebration of family
traditions passed down over the
years.
The threads of various ethnic
traditions are woven together at
Doon, as the decorations and food
in each of the homes reflect these
family and ethnic traditions.

Christmas by 1914 was already an
