Municipal reps sign
CHuMS agreement
The agreement for the district
mobility bus agreement was signed
recently by representatives from
five municipalities at a meeting in
Seaforth.
The Central Huron Mobility Ser
vice (CHuMS) agreement, which
will provide transportation for
mobility impaired people and hope
fully be operating by next spring,
was ratified by representatives from
Clinton, Seaforth, McKillop, Hul-
lett and Tuckersmilh Townships.
A representative from the Min
istry of Transport, Peter Coghill
said the agreement is the 100th
such service in the province, repre
senting 212 municipalities. He said
that despite government cutbacks in
many areas, he does not foresee
any future problems with funding
for this service.
The reality of CHuMS came after
considerable negotiations between
the townships. But, it's not over yet.
About $20,000 remains of the
approximately $51,000 total needed
to buy the bus, though organizers
insist, however, that municipalities'
dollars will not be required.
A CHuMS study indicates that of
the total five municipality popula
tion of 11,789, 471 would be eligi
ble for specilized transit now. A
press release from the steering
committee notes that fares for in
town trips will probably be $2.50
for each one-way trip and out-of-
town trips will be slightly higher,
while the rates for distance and
charter trips have not been set; 24
hours advance notice will be need
ed in order to guarantee service
with calling recommended when
making an appointment; escorts if
required, may ride free; compan
ions pay regular fare; local taxis
and other vehicles will also be used
to provide service and once-a-week
charter trips are being considered.
With Director of Music Phyllic Boak accompanying them at the piano, members of the Blyth
United Church choir were busy rehearsing last week, fine tuning for their scheduled
performance with noted musician Frank Mills. His Celebration of Christmas was presented in
Blyth Memorial Hall this past Sunday evening. The choir, which backed-up Mr. Mills during his
Christmas concert last year, was back for an encore.

Headlining this week's new releases is Speed **1/2 (Fox - $24.95 or
less), a mindless non-stop action thriller starring Keanu Reeves as a cop
who attempts to rescue the passengers on a Los Angeles city bus that is
rigged to blow up if it goes slower than 50 mph. This is actually a pretty
good movie for the first two thirds of its running time, but unfortunately in
the last third the suspension of disbelief we are asked to accept is just too
much, making the film for me at least, terminally stupid.
Also in the cast are Dennis Hopper, Sandra Bullock and Jeff Daniels.
(Rated R)
Keanu Reeves also appears in Little Buddha *** (C/FP) a definite
change of pace role from his action hero in Speed. The plot of this film
features the intertwining story of three children who are believed to
possess the reincarnated soul of a Buddhist monk and the birth of a new
religion with Reeves portraying Siddhartha the pampered prince who
becomes Buddha. While many may find this film a bit on the slow side I
found it a fascinating and a sensitive look at a culture so different from our
own.
Little Buddha is directed by Bemardo Bertolucci (The Last Emperor)
and rated G.
Without a doubt the week's biggest yawn is Cops and Robbersons *
(Columbia/Tristar), an alleged comedy starring alleged comedian Chevy
Chase. The plot finds a veteran cop (Jack Palance) and his rookie partner
staking out a mobster from Chase's house. This film should be an
embarrassment for all concerned. (Rated PG)
Among the other new and unpreviewed releases this week is Beverly
Hills Cop 1H (Paramount) which finds Detroit cop Axel Foley (Eddie
Murphy) back in L.A. looking for the guy who killed his boss. Apparently
there is lots of destruction and mayhem at a popular California amusement
park. (Rated R)
Lou Diamond Phillips stars in Sioux City (Cabin Fever) as a Beverly
Hills doctor who investigates the murder of his mother. (Rated PG-13)
In The Birds II: Land's End (MCA/Universal) a family vacationing on a
tiny East Coast Island are menaced by flocks of killer birds. A sequel to
Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 thriller. (Rated R)
Basketball fans will no doubt be thrilled with the Michael Jordan two-
pack from Fox Video. This package includes the videos Come Fly With
Me and Air Time as well as a 44-page career retrospective.
For football fans, the folks over al Polygram Video are offering two
videos called NFL: Best of 25 Years of ABC's Monday Night Football and
NFL 75 Seasons: The 75th Anniversary of the NFL. Each titles sells for
$19.95.
And for anybody who still cares, TV's Hard Copy has compiled
Marilyn: The Last Word (Paramount - $24.95) yet another documentary
about the events surrounding the untimely death of Marilyn Munroe.
