Turn child’s play into clean up If your child's room resembles a construction zone, with toys strewn all over the floor and dirty clothes stuffed under the bed, you're not alone. Convincing children to clean their rooms can be one of the most difficult challenges parents face. According to lifestyle consultant and do-it-yourself expert Beverly DeJulio, children often fail to clean their rooms not because they mean to disobey, but because their rooms do not have adequate storage. "Few children's rooms have the floor or closet space of master bedrooms," says Ms DeJulio. "In many cases, there really is no place to put the toys but under the bed." To help children organize and display their favourite things, DeJulio suggests putting the walls to work with easy-to-install decorative shelving. "Of course, installing shelving is no guarantee that you will be able to see what colour the carpet is in your child's room, but it will greatly increase your child's storage area," explains Ms DeJulio. When selecting shelving, look for attractive, well-crafted shelving units that will blend in with the child's style in decor, suggests DeJulio. "Products should allows you to paint the standards and brackets to match any colour scheme." And shelves reinforced with steel rails and optional bookend brackets to keep heavy items and books in their place are a good choice. Shelving can even serve as a small work area or vanity when installed at desk height. "Hang a mirror above a bottom shelf, and littlb girls have a place to dress up and put on jewelry, just like their favourite movie star," explains Ms DeJulio. She also recommends installing shelving at child height, so that favourite toys and storytimc books can go on lower shelves within easy reach. "Keep fragile items, like porcelain dolls or prized trophies, on the highest shelves, out of reach." Whether you're a veteran do-it- your-selfer or a rookie, installing shelving in a child's room - or any other room - is a practical solution to controlling clutter, says Ms DeJulio. "It's attractive, affordable and easy to install - but, best of all, it's a solution that may just make parenting a bit easier." Gas fireplaces, popular choice By Janice Becker With the high cost of heating homes and the ever present concern about non-renewable resources, there is one type of home heating which has experienced a boom in recent years. Gas fireplace distributors, whe ther it be propane or natural gas, have seen an increased demand for the product in the past five years. "The fuel efficiency of gas fire places can reach 80 per cent," says Hetty Stuart of Stu's Chimney Sweep and Stove Shoppe, Whitechurch. "A good wood sys tem may reach 75 per cent." There is a wide variety of fire places which are available to suit just about every taste and room configuration, including individual preferences for flame and log style. "Models designed in North America tend to have a more prominent flame whereas the Euro pean styles rely on a glowing look. The Europeans are used to coal fires and design the fireplaces after them," says Mrs. Stuart. Most models are available in free standing or wall units and can be built into a niche in the room. When looking for a gas fireplace, there are several features which should be considered, other than than the many aesthetic values. The fireplaces are designed to heat areas from 800 to 1,500 square feet and arc geared for two or three rooms as opposed to an entire house. Proponents of gas fireplaces list several benefits to the system, one of the most important being the fact that the heat is steady, adjustable and even. The heating units can be set at the desired level and left unattend ed without worries of restocking as with woodstoves or the two degree fluctuations of furnace systems. Another benefit to gas is the easy and relatively inexpensive installa tion of the fireplaces. "A basic unit, completely installed, taxes included would cost approximately $1,500," says Mrs. Stuart, "but the additional features available are almost end less." "A client can have a bare wall transformed by adding a fireplace, mantel, ceramic or marble tiles and have the drywalling and carpentry around the unit completed to create an entire look," she says. Some companies provide instal lation, gas hook up, carpentry and decorative features, the cost and design is only limited to the desires of the customer. The installation of the propane or natural gas hook-up must be done- by a licensed professional to meet industry approval. Venting for the system is more easily installed than with a wood stove and they need little floor and wall heat protection. Once the unit is in place, there is low maintenance because there are no ashes to dispose of and no worry of creosote build-up. Gas is also a very clean-buming fuel. For those interested in a gas fire place and considering propane, but looking to the availability of natu ral gas in the future, conversions are easily accomplished. "Most fireplaces can be converted to natu ral gas with a kit which ranges in price from $35 to $135," says Mrs. Stuart. For the warm glow of burning embers and cosy ambience on cold winter nights, the ease and conve nience of gas fireplaces may be the answer to home heating needs.
