Saturday night the Crusaders lost their first of the year, 6-3 to the Wellesley Merchants. The Crusaders have had little success in Wellesley winning only once in 10 tries since their first meeting in 1986. Wellesley took a 2-0 first period lead, increased it to 5-0 after 40 minutes, then ended a three goal Crusaders rally in the third by scoring with five minutes remaining. Brian TenPas scored twice for Brussels and set up Corey McKee for the third goal while Brent Vandenakker and Dave Murray each recorded two assists. Derek Cooper took the loss facing 43 shots. The game, played in two hours, saw only five minor penalties called. Sunday night in Brussels J.C. Hewitt opened the scoring, then set up the next three leading the Crusaders to a 5-1 win over Palmerston. Corey McKee enjoyed a two goal, one assist game while Brent Vandenakker and Dean Wheeler, shorthanded, completed the scoring. Brussels held a 3-0 first period lead and added two more midway through the final period. Trevor Fortune lost his shutout bid with less than five minutes remaining on the clock. The Crusaders’ next game is at home Sunday night at 7:30 p.m. against the Arthur Tigers. The well-matched teams took turns dominating play with the final result a 5-5 tie. Brussels Novices earn victory Atom Reps win 8-0 Friday night saw the Brussels Atoms beat Listowel 8-0. Matt McCall recorded his second shutout of the year. Brian Oldfield scored the only goal of the first period at 8:21 with helpers going to Robert Kerr and Nolan Krotz. The home town boys carried the play to start the second period as Chris Blake scored on a pass from Stephen Todd and Chris Coulter at 8:02. Three minutes later Nolan Krotz scored on a nice give and go from Oldfield. Coulter rounded out the scoring in the second on a set up from Todd. The boys continued to carry the play as Krotz scored al 10:51 with assists going to Darryl Houston and Todd. Two minutes later Kerr bulged the twine on a pass from Oldfield and Krotz. With 3:30 left Chris Blake got his second goal of the game with Coulter getting the helper. Robert Kerr finished out the scoring on this game with 1:37 left on a pass from Oldfield. The defence core of Phillip Affolter, Marc Fischer, Houston, and Andy Van Beek played a very solid game. Sunday afternoon the Atoms hosted the Atoms from Blyth. Blyth got on the scoreboard first at the 2:52 mark as Matt Anderson ripped home a shot on pass from Tyler Wilson. Brussels tied the score with one minute left as Coulter scored on a pass from Stephen Todd. Coulter gave the home town Atoms a four goal lead with Todd and Affolter assisting at 10:51. Blyth got that goal back 7:20 as Jeremy Hanna scored from Anderson. Coulter completed his hat-trick with 17 seconds left in the second on some good comer work from Oldfield. The third saw Oldfield score on a pass from Kerr and Krotz, then Coulter scored his fourth goal at 8:52 on a pass from Houston. Blyth scored al 4:28 as Shawn Henry received a nice pass from Jeff Carter. Brussels completed the scoring on this day when Nolan Krotz scored off Kerr's fourth assist of the game. Sean Hoegy, assisted by Tyler Campbell and Brandon Blake, scored for the home team with 10 minutes left in the final frame. Joel Hemingway put the Brussels Blyth Novices settle for tie with Bayfield On Nov. 10, the Bayfield Novice team pulled into town. Blyth met them with shots blazing and cruised to a 4-0 lead in the first period with two goals from Cole Stewart and singles from Bradley Schmidt and Micah Loder.
