From the Minister's Study Jesus helps apply God’s word to life By Tom Warner, Pastor Brussels Mennonite Fellowship Two items have been put away for the winter, sun block and bug repellent. Why is it these two things seem strangely alike? The one, the bug repellent, we use as a convenience item. This is because we get bugged by those little summer pests called bugs. This stuff works a bit. It seems to work more if you believe it does than it really does. The sun block on the other hand is not just a convenience item. While on the beach this past summer I missed covering my ankles. I in time had bright red ankles. A certain amount of pain was associated with them. Now the experts tell us that in time too many bums like this will become a death threat to us. Cancer will eventually catch up to skin from the bums. I’m not a medical person. Therefore I basically believe the medical people who tell me this is so. Let's review. Bug repellent seems to work. Sun block does work. There are two issues here. One is truth. The other is faith. How much truth is there to bug repellent when you continue to get bit? But the truth about skin cancer is a scientific truth. It is documented repeatedly that folks die due to overexposure to the sun. The faith item now comes to bear on these truths. But where there is no truth or faulty truth, if that is possible, then how does faith work? No matter how much I believe in the bug repellent I still get bit. But not much faith is required to know the truth of a sun block, (remember my ankles). The Bible is like the sun block. Unless the entire truth of the Bible is applied to our lives, somewhere we will be unprotected and will experience the pain of that choice. In time it too will add up to death. The issue of truth and faith once again go together here. Do we truly believe all the Bible or only the parts I like? I am foolish to apply sun block only to some body parts and leave the rest unprotected. So am I foolish to not take all of the scripture into consideration and to protect all of my life now and in the hereafter. There is some stuff in the Bible that is hard to accept and apply. I cannot apply sun block to my back. I need help. Well this is where Jesus comes along to take my weaknesses and sins and inability to apply all of God's word to my life. He takes those things off my shoulders and takes them to Himself, then carries them to the cross in death and has left them there. Now He is the SON BLOCK. By His blood we are protected from the effects of our sin and errors against God. This is the truth issue. The other is faith. Where is yours? Hey, you can choose not to believe ail the Bible, but if you're wrong and I'm right by believing this truth, where do you end up and where do I? But if you are right and I am wrong we both end up in the same place - where ever? But otherwise I end up in heaven, you in hell. That's hard to accept, but that's the truth. Now where's your faith? God's word, God's Son is not like the bug repellent. It is like the sun block. Apply it all over, regularly. The results when applied by faith - fullness of life now, and eternal life after death. Teen team attends service A team from Teen Challenge was at Auburn Missionary Church on Sunday, Nov. 6 in music and testimony. Teen Challenge is on a farm near London, where teens, who are hooked on drugs and alcohol, can go. Here lives are changed and transformed by the power of Christ. God is able to take the worst criminal and make that person into a new creation. The residents learn to live a responsible life, sharing with others, through daily Bible classes, chapel, homework, chores and recreation. Bob Edwards performed two solos Like a Father and Broken Hearts and Broken Pieces. Jesus wants a heart that is completely surrendered to Him. The congregation's love and prayers are extended to Virginia and John Stright in the passing of Virginia's father last Friday.
