Graham bull reaches $76 Sales at Brussels Livestock for the week ending Nov. 4 were: fed cattle, 937; cows, 309; veal calves, 149; sheep and goats, 125; Stockers, 2,800; and pigs, light run. The steers and heifers at Brussels Livestock were selling $1 higher. Cows traded at fully steady prices to last week. Thursday saw veal selling $2 - $3 higher. Lambs sold $5 - $10 higher. For Friday the Stockers were selling fully steady to last week. There were 576 steers on offer selling from $87 to $94 to the high of $102.50. Twenty steers consign­ ed by Jim Howatt, Londesborough, averaging 1,423 lbs. sold for an average of $95.55 with sales to $102.50. Thirty steers consigned by Johnston Farms, Bluevale, averag­ ing 1,361 lbs. sold for an average of $90.15 with sales to $99. Forty- six steers consigned by J. A. McCann & Sons Ltd., Ailsa Craig, averaging 1,430 lbs. sold for an average of $91.87 with sales to $97.75. Eighteen steers consigned by Don Culbert, Dungannon, averag­ ing 1,451 lbs. sold for an average of $90.36 with sales to $97. Ten steers consigned by Percy Bros., Holyrood, averaging 1,310 lbs. sold for an average of $90.59 with sales to $95.50. Twenty-nine steers consigned by Cunningham Farms, Lucan, averaging 1,390 lbs. sold for an average of $89.94 with sales to $95. OMAFRA hosts tax seminar By Brian Hall Business Management Advisor Huron County The Ontario Ministry of Agricul­ ture, Food and Rural Affairs is offering a Farm Tax Seminar for farm families. The seminar will be held Thursday, Dec. 1, in the OMAFRA seminar room, Clinton ' beginning at 12:30 p.m. John S. McNeilly, chartered accountant, Exeter will be presenting farm tax principles that will help farmers in year-end tax planning strategies. The registration fee for the seminar is $7. Pre­ registration is required. Cash basis accounting has allowed farmers much flexibility in farm income reporting and tax planning. Mr. McNeilly will dis­ cuss some strategies in addition to making presentations on personal, partnership, and corporation taxation; tax treatment of specific Cranbrook 4-Hers bake By Sarah McLellan Meeting No. 3 of the Cranbrook 4-H club began with the 4-H pledge. We then did a small amount of reading in the book. After that, we split into two groups to bake angel food and raisin spice cake. After the baking was completed, we tasted our efforts along with a drink. We read a little bit more in the book, and closed the meeting. A silver collection awarded the club $7.15. This will most likely be put towards ingredients for the recipes throughout the club. The next meeting will be held on Nov. 12 at I p.m. at the Cranbrook Hall. In addition, an update on GST, NISA and the $100,000 capital gains exemption, which ends this year, will be discussed. It is recommended that you begin thinking about this matter now. Jersey co-op plans open house Community Futures - Jersey Co-op will be holding an open meeting on Friday, Nov. 11 at the Clinton OMAFRA office, 100 Don St., Clinton at 1 p.m. The purpose of the meeting will be to present the results of the feasibility study conducted by the University of Western Ontario's BRUSSELS LIVESTOCK Division of Gamble & Rogers Ltd. Don't leave tax planning until your accountant is busy filing income tax. Attending this seminar will help you understand some basic tax principles in order that you may discuss and understand those with your accountant. Agency holds workshop By Brian Hall Business Management Advisor Huron County The Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs is offering a two day workshop for farm families who want to start planning for retirement or the transfer of a farm. In Huron County, workshop dates are Wednesday, Dec. 7 and 14 and Feb. 9 and 16. Workshops run from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. and are held in the OMAFRA seminar room, Clinton. Registration fee for the two day workshop, including two lunches and GST, is $40 for one person. Multiple registrations from farms are encouraged and reduced group prices are available. Registration is limited to 24 per course. Seminars will be led by OMAFRA staff along with presen­ tations by a lawyer, accountant, and a fanner. Personal planning is imperative in order to create certainty for your future plans. This course will help you with personal and business issues in light of the latest legal and tax rules.
