Blyth Midgets take consolation championship
eventual game winner before the
first period expired. Blyth was
enjoying a two-man powerplay as
Peter Craig’s point shot was tipped
to Haggitt by Armstrong.
The line of Chamney, Howson
and Hakkers then swung into action
in period two as Howson upped the
lead to 3-1. The line lit up the red
light with the last goal of the game
midway through the third. Both

game as Chamney poked the puck
in from a scramble.
Lucan received over twice as
many penalty minutes as Blyth but
Blyth's discipline resulted in them
claiming the Consolation

coming home from Zurich with the

By Rusty Blades
Blyth put three solid games of
hockey together on the weekend as
they participated in the Zurich
Midget Tournament. After losing
their first game in overtime, the
boys responded for two straight
wins to claim the tournament
Consolation Championship.
Blyth opened against Ilderton on
Friday night as the lead changed
back and forth throughout, before
Ilderton scored late in overtime to
edge the locals 4-3.
Ilderton took a 1-0 lead midway
through the first but Peter Craig
performed his magic two minutes
later to tie the game 1-1.
Goaltender Michael deJong
assisted on the goal as he watched
Craig skate coast-to-coast before
scoring on a nifty deke.
Blyth took a 2-1 lead on a
powerplay goal one and a half
minutes into the second as
Christopher Howson and John
Armstrong both had a whack at the
puck before Benjie Hakkers poked
the puck in from the scramble.
Ilderton took a 3-2 lead before
the second period ended but Blyth
scored the only third period tally to
send the game into overtime. With
just under seven minutes remaining
the Craig boys, Peter and Ben,
teamed up to set up Mike
Salverda's power play equalizer.
It was a wild finish to the third
period and continued throughout
the five minute overtime frame.
Both teams had plenty of scoring
chances but Ilderton was the only
team to finish one off as they
scored a powerplay goal with one
minute and 43 seconds left on he
clock. Blyth pressured until the
final buzzer but Ilderton came out
the victors with this 4-3 overtime
win.
Blyth tangled with Dorchester in
their second toumey game al noon
on Sunday. 'Teemu' Cowan
provided the offensive spark by
assisting on three Blyth goals and
enabling Blyth to eam their first
win of the year by a 5-1 score.
Joey Johns, who finally con

first minute of the game, with
assists to Jonathan Collins and
Brian Marks.
Cowan assisted on two quick
goals with just under six minutes
left in the first with linemates
Marks and Mike Salverda pulling
the trigger. Salverda also assisted
on Marks' goal.
Chris Stewart gave Blyth a 4-1
lead with the only second period
goal as Cowan notched his third
straight assist and Chad Haggitt his
first.
The game was Blyth's the rest of
the way as both Michael deJong
and Chris Bromley preserved the
lead with some sparkling saves.
Benjie Hakkers completed the
scoring with seven minutes
remaining in the game as he took a
Ryan Chamney drop pass and
wristed one upstairs, giving Blyth
the 5-1 win.
This sent Blyth into the
Consolation Championship early
Sunday evening against Lucan.
Early evening soon turned into late
evening as Lucan lead the penalty
parade and, as a result, Blyth lead
the scoring parade by notching four
powerplay goals and claiming the
Championship with a 4-1 triumph.
Discipline and passing were the
keys to the game with two assists
being awarded on all of Blyth's
goals.
Chris Stewart opened the scoring
two and a half minutes into the
game as a result of a fine three way
passing play with linemates Chad
Haggitt and John Armstrong.
Lucan tied the game two minutes
later but Haggitt notched the
