County plans Drug Awareness Week activities As part of the Huron County's local Drug Awareness Week Nov. 13-19 (DAW) activities, Huron Addiction Assessment & Referral Centre (HAARC) will host a luncheon workshop entitled "Family, Recovery & Spirituality" at the Maitland Country Club in Goderich on Friday, Nov. 18 from 12 noon to I 1 4 p.m. The cost of this workshop is $15 which includes lunch. Registration deadline is Nov. 16. Contact HAARC 482-1767. Meryl Thomas, director of HAARC says "Approximately 10 - 20 per cent of Ontario residents over the age of 15 experience difficulties with substance abuse. However, there are many more people behind these numbers who are also affected. The presence of someone's alcohol/drug problems affects, not only the person using the chemical, but all those who have a significant relationship with the person. Chemical , dependency is often referred to as the 'family disease' due to its impact on family members. Family members may feel trapped and out of control - hanging on for dear life. The question of whether a family will be okay or blow up into a crisis is always in the air. Some families live in a state of perpetual turmoil and conflict while others harbour a pervasive sense of dread, feeling that something is definitely wrong nut never quite sure what." In recognition of the Interna tional Year of the Family, guest speaker, Lori Edey, will explore the impact of chemical dependency on the family, as well as discuss the process of spiritual recovery for that family. Ms Edey is a former Special Education teacher and pastoral minister. She has worked in the addictions field since 1982. Her work has involved both clinical and pastoral components with chemically dependent and their families. She is certified as a Specialist in Institutional Ministry through the Canadian Association of Pastoral Education. Currently, she serves as Chaplain at the Homewood Health Centre Inc., Guelph. Drug Awareness Week is a national event to raise awareness of drug and alcohol abuse. Special events like this workshop are taking place across the country to encourage communities to work together to promote healthy lifestyles.
