The Blyth Novice hockey team
played host to Milverton on
Thursday, Oct. 27. This was
another close, low-scoring, action-
packed game. Blyth's only goal was
the result of an end-to-end rush by
defenceman Michael Bean, who
sneaked a wrist shot past the goalie.
However, with just 1:26 left on
the clock, Milverton's Jeff Dale
squeezed a rebound under Eric
Jarrett's pads, to end the game tied
1-1.
Three days later, Blyth travelled
to Bayfield, were they notched-up
Blyth Midgets begin with loss
By Rusty Blades
The Blyth Midgets were one of
the last Blyth minor hockey teams
to see game action this season as
they hosted the Ripley Redwoods
in an exhibition encounter Sunday
evening. Ripley spoiled Blyth’s
debut of yet another new set of
sweaters as they scored a goal in
every period on their way to
winning 3-1.
Blyth tied the game with five
minutes left in the second after a
rink-length dash by Peter Craig.
Craig rushed deep into the Ripley
zone before sending a pin-point
another victory. Justin Peters
opened the scoring for Blyth after
working hard to get into Bayfield's
zone to take a nice shot from a
difficult angle. Kirk Stewart
assisted..
Shortly after, Bayfield's Kyle
Courtney tied the game. The
second goal for Blyth came from
Neil Salverda, who persevered
through a scramble in front of
Bayfield's net to poke in the loose
puck. Kirk Stewart assisted.
Cole Stewart added another for
Blyth with an unassisted sharp
pass to Chad Haggitt, who tipped
the puck in from the edge of the
goal crease.
Ripley took the lead before the
period ended and salted away the 3-
1 victory with a power play tally
midway through the third.
Coach Doug Chamney, who was
the only one without a hiding spot
when the coaching volunteers were
being sought, said the team played
well considering this was their first
game of the season. He stated that
Blyth has 18 players this year and it
will take some time for everyone to
angled shot lilted into the net's
corner. Neil Salverda delivered a
short-handed insurance goal with a
nice long shot sliding past the still
goalie. Kirk Stewart assisted.
Bayfield came back with two
goals, but ran out of time as Blyth's
goalie Eric Jarrett held them for the
4-3 win.
Also contributing greatly for
Blyth achieving the win, was
Michael Bean who played a solid
defence position, and Micah Loder
who did a great job at centre.

deserved as he earned a medal by raising the second

Gorrie hosts UCW Regional
The 32nd North Huron Regional
Rally of the United Church Women
was held in Gorrie United Church
on Tuesday, Oct. 11. The church
sanctuary was very nicely decor
ated in a harvest Thanksgiving
theme.
Nancy Corrigan led the ladies in
a sing-song after everyone had
registered. After Rev. Jeff
Hawkin's words of welcome, he
called regional president Barb
Anderson and Huron-Perth
president Betty Graber to the front
where he presented each with a pin
- a replica of Gorrie United Church.
Barb Anderson welcomed
everyone and called the meeting to
order. Jeanette Wardrop of
Wingham was appointed secretary
for the evening. Betty Graber
brought greetings from Huron-
Perth Presbyterial and the minutes
of last year's rally were read.
Six ladies from Fordwich/
Kurtzville provided special music
by singing All Things Beautiful and
Fair.
Barb Anderson paid tribute to
Vera Nicholson, the president of
Bluevale UCW who died in May of
this year.
The business portion of the
meeting was carried out followed
by the roll call. There were 50
people present.
Nancy Corrigan of Bluevale took
everyone through a "stretch break"
to the music of a cassette tape of
New England hymns.
The guest speaker was Irene
Richardson of Staffa who spoke on
"Family of the 90s". She
emphasized how love and nurturing
is so important to grow healthy and
be equipped to be a part of society.
Teach children the heritage of
family and church. This will help
them to honour those things, she
said.
Muriel Coultes of Belgrave
thanked the speaker and also
everyone else who had taken part in
the evening.
The worship service was
conducted by Wroxeter UCW. The
offering was collected by
Whitechurch UCW which in turn
extended an invitation to everyone
to come to Whitechurch for the
regional rally in 1995.
Having completed her term as
regional president Barb Anderson
thanked everyone for all their help
during the past two years.
Gorrie UCW provided tasty
refreshments for everyone at the
conclusion of the rally.
