Local candidates discuss important issues So that voters might become better acquainted with their municipal candidates and elected officials prior to the Nov. 14 election a question­ naire was distributed to those candidates in The Citizen's readership area. Following are the comments received to date. ♦ * ® -■», IK*'* *> Gordon Workman Mr. Workman is seeking the position of reeve. He wants to be a representative to the people and support the community to the best of his ability. Eugene D. Coburn Eugene Coburn is seeking the position of reeve. He has previous­ ly served one and a half years as a councillor in Blyth. He is seeking the position because the present reeve is retiring and he would like to continue the accomplishments in the village, he said. "I see the most important issue for me is to protect all present employees." He commends the vil­ lage clerk. "Over eight years she has instilled order and control out of chaos, and brought honesty, experience, and dedication to her job," he says. His personal goal is to spend a portion of his retirement years working in the interest of all resi­ dents of Blyth. Mason Bailey Many years of community involvement have led Mason Bai­ ley to run for reeve of Blyth after one and a half years as a councillor. As a resident of Blyth for 55 years, Mr. Bailey has served on many boards, including the East Wawanosh School Board, Huron County Federation of Agriculture, OFA Board of Directors, Ontario Mutual Insurance Company, Clin­ ton Public Hospital Board, North Huron Publishing Company and Clinton Credit Union. "Our community has been good to me, my wife and family for the past 40 years," says Mr. Bailey. "I feel that I have had enough experience in business and elected stewardship positions that I can now give something back to our community by contributing some normal and fair leadership in main­ taining and developing our commu­ nity." George Reinink Mary Stretton Incumbent Mary Stretton is returning to council. She has previ­ ously served six years. Mrs. Stretton says she enjoys working with the public, and wants to see completion to all projects that are started. The most important issues to her are: keeping taxes to a minimum, listening to the suggestions of the citizens, and cutting out unneces­ sary spending. Her personal goal, as a taxpayer, is to cut back on public spending. She is a member of Rebekah Lodge and the BMG Rec. Board. She has been a health care aide for 12 years and is an OPP contact for the Village of Brussels. John W. Lowe Newcomer John Lowe has been acclaimed to Brussels council. His experiences in the communi­ ty include: Tri-County Minor Soft- ball Association, Brussels Fall Fair Director (1991), Brussels Santa Claus Parade Committee(1990) Brussels Bulls Jr. C Executive Member (1990, '91, '92), Brussels Legion Member, Brussels Umpire Continued on page 7 A Blyth resident for three years, George Reinink has decided to run for PUC Commissioner. The self-employed contractor and farmer, who has also volunteered his time over two years as a Beaver leader says, "I think the PUC can be run more economically, by let­ ting the employees do the jobs they are qualified for." Mr. Reinink says he would like to make land development an easier process by getting questions answered as quickly as possible for the developer. Fair rules and regulations for all is another priority, while his per­ sonal goal is to keep the public informed, he said. He was previously a member of the PUC during a five year term as the reeve of Blyth. He has been a village councillor, the reeve, and while a member of county council, the chairman of the Health Committee and the chair­ man of the Roads Committee. He has been a member of the local business community for 37 years. He is seeking the position, he said, because he has the time to attend meetings, he has the know­ how, and he is interested in updat­ ing services, while keeping the budget under control. "The most important issue is working with the council as a team, in an effort to please the majority .3 of ratepayers, while providing excellent services and keeping the budget in line." His personal goal is to get the most out of every tax dollar. Gerald Allan Kerr Gerald Kerr has been acclaimed as a member of Blyth council. He has gained experience in poli­ tics as the adjuster of West Wawanosh Insurance Company for 28 years. Mr. Kerr said he sought the posi­ tion because he wanted to be involved with a strong council, lie wants the council to concentrate on working together for the good of the people, in a logical and reason­ able fashion.
