Grey Central Echo
School works towards peacemaking prog.
By Crystal Ahrens
This year our class is made up of
28 students. We have a split grade,
Grades 5/6. Our teacher's name is
Mrs. Suzanne Irwin. We have 14
girls and 13 boys in our class this
year.

and David Cullen
Our school is working toward
"playground peacemakers" for the
playground. Grade 6 students have
been invited to apply for the
position of peacemaker. The
successful candidate will undergo a
training program which will assist
them in helping to resolve conflict
between youngsters on the yard.
Supervising teachers will be
consulted if the dispute is serious or
if students do not wish to talk to

put up a teepee.
First when the Grade 7 class go
there, Mr. Clark explained about
the Indians and why they used
teepees. He talked a lot about
teepees like the north and the south
end and why the door always faces
the east. (The door always faces the
east because the Indians said that
the sunrise is the beginning of a
new day.)
We also found out that the
Indians have spiritual religions.
Then we went to put up the teepee.
We started by tying together the
north, south, and east poles. Then
we pushed them in and brought the
north end around. Then one of the
poles broke so we got a new one
and repeated the process.
After that we got more poles and
each other about the problem.
It is hoped that peacemakers will
have a hat or some other piece of
clothing which will identify them.
The program will assist young
people in learning to resolve
difficulties through communication
and co-operation and learn
strategies for conflict resolution.

Our class decided to make a class
creed to let other people know the
way we would like to be treated. It
goes like this...We pledge to
respect each person and their
belongings. All ideas and opinions
will be heard and respected. We
promise to treat each other nicely
and not to hurt them in any way.
We will treat others as we would
want to be treated ourselves.
placed them between the first three.
Then we used the rope that was left
hanging from tying the first three
together to tie the rest together at
the top. The rope was only to be
wrapped around the top four times,
because it was part of their spiritual
religion.
Then we put the main pole up
and wrapped the tarp around the
frame. Then we tied the part over
the door space together and pinned
in pegs part of the way down. We
pinned up the door and then went
inside.
Inside the smoke flap was open
but we didn't get time to close it.
The smoke flap lets the smoke go
out when the Indians had a fire in
the teepee.
Then we talked awhile and left,
and that concludes our trip to Mr.
Clark's house.

We have just started doing our
class newsletter. The first two
people that did our class newsletter
were Julie Machan and David
Cullen. They wrote about each
subject that wc have and things that
we like to do.
The next two people are JayCee
Kubassek and Tamara Diehl.
When we are done we take them
home to our parents so they know
what is going on.
ENVIRONMENT FAIR
By Justin Walker
On Thursday Oct. 20, we went to
the Environmental Fair. There
were 28 exhibits such as what kinds
of birds would use a birdhouse,
Maitland Valley Conservation and
what processes wool goes through
before being made into a blanket.
These were some of the exciting
exhibits at the fair.
Grade 3 to 8 will continue to
leam to Reuse, Reduce and Recycle
in hope of a better future.
MY BEST FRIEND
By Jodi Semple
Golden hair and eyes of blue,
Just to give you a little clue.
Kind, honest and friendly as can
be,
These are the qualities that are
important to me.
Playing soccer or just plain
hanging out,
Wouldn't be the same without
you, no doubt.
Our friendship may bend and
bend,
But if it's up to me, it will never
end.
By Philipp Affoiter
and Brian Oldfield
In our class there are five people
who play hockey. They are Philipp
Affoiter, Brian Oldfield, Marc
Fischer, Mark Hunter and Devon
Frank. They all play for Brussels.
We are all in Atom and there is
an "A" team and a "B" team. Both
teams have had four practices and
the A team had one game which
they won 5-4.
The A team has a game on
Friday, Oct. 21 against Mitchell in
Brussels at 7:30.
SOCCER
By Marc Fischer
In intramural soccer there are
three boys' teams and three girls'
teams. Soccer is only for Grades 4
to 8. We have tournaments and this
year it was boys' Team three
against Team two. Team three won
in the third game 3-1.
For the girls' soccer Team Two
won in the final game with Team
Three. Soccer ended on Oct. 19.
So that's all until next year.

Picture time
By Philip Graber and
Ashley Gropp
Students al BPS seem to be in
front of cameras a lot more than
usual lately.
On Oct. 18 the Royal Canadian
Legion held a video ID program for
Grades kindergarten, 4 and 8. The
point of the program is to help the
police find missing children.
Students walked in front of the
camera and a background showed
how tall they were. They also
stated their names, ages, grades and
how they got to school.
They also got school pictures
taken. There were individual and
class pictures. Retakes will be held
on Nov. 11.
Our leader is Mrs. Irwin. We
practise in the gym every
Wednesday and Friday at 12:20.
We go to different schools to
perform for the whole school.
There are 16 people on the team
from Grade 4 to 8. We are on the
team to try to keep healthy and to
have fun.
LIBRARY HELPERS
By Tamara Diehl
and Cheryl Armstrong
Every day two people go to our
library to help. They are called
library helpers. Some library
helpers help other people sign out
books, help to find books, put
books back on the shelves, help
people on the computer and help
people learn how to read. You
leam how to discharge and how to
renew a book and how to charge a
book out to somebody. Sometimes
we have other library work to do
like taping books back together and
helping people find the information
they want.
The students went to the
Environmental Fair on Thursday. It
seemed everyone enjoyed them
selves and learned some interesting
things about the environment.
Primary classes are getting ready
for Halloween by having fun and
learning at the same time. Crafts,
songs, poems and stories as well as
learning about spiders, bats, ghosts,
and goblins are all part of the
school for this week. In fact, Ms
A's Grade 1/2, and Mrs. Clark's
Grade 2/3 classes will be going to
Huronlea to recite poems, and sing
songs. The Grade 4's will be
writing their own Halloween story.
Have a safe and happy
Halloween!
