O’Brien steers ave. $84.25, hit high of $93.25 Sales at Brussels Livestock for the week ending Oct. 21 were: fed cattle, 625; cows, 218; veal calves, 200; sheep and goats, 100; stockers, 2,000; and pigs, light run. The market at Brussels Livestock saw fed steers and heifers trading $2 - $3 higher. Cows sold on a fully steady trade. Veal were selling on a steady market. Lambs and sheep were steady. The Friday Stocker sale saw all weights of calves and yearlings selling on a fully steady market. There were 447 steers on offer selling from $80 to $86 to the high of $93.25. Twenty-five steers consigned by Wayne O'Brien, Centralia, averaging 1,398 lbs. sold for an average of $84.25 with sales to $93.25. Thirteen steers consigned by Schmidt Brook Farms Inc., Woodstock, averaging 1,428 lbs. sold for an average of $85.22 with sales to $93. Seventeen steers consigned by Cunningham Farms, Lucan, averaging 1,364 lbs. sold for an average of $83.90 with sales to $91. Thirteen steers consigned by Beetonia Farms Ltd., Beeton, averaging 1,331 lbs. sold for an average of $84.08 with sales to $89.75. Six steers consigned by Don Bailey, Elmwood, averaging 1,122 lbs. sold for an average of $85.86 with sales to $88.25. Twenty-six steers consigned by Smid-Parker Farms, Kincardine, averaging 1,017 lbs. sold for an average of $85.57 with sales to $88.10. Ten steers consigned by Doug Shiell, Wingham, averaging 1,409 lbs. sold for an average of $84.12 with sales to $87.75. Thirty- nine steers consigned by PDM Steckle Farms Ltd., Zurich, averaging 1,214 lbs. sold for an average of $85.77 with sales to $87. Forty-five steers consigned by J. A. McCann & Sons Ltd., Ailsa Craig, averaging 1,450 lbs. sold for an average of $85.28 with sales to $86.50. Seven steers consigned by Schultz Bros., Blyth, averaging 1,095 lbs. sold for an average of $81.86 with sales to $85. There were 153 heifers on offer selling from $80 to $86 to the high of $87. One cow consigned by Fred Peel, Auburn, weighing 950 lbs. sold for $73. Four cows consigned by Keith Vanderhoerk, Ripley, averaging 1,115 lbs. sold for an average of $60.75 with sales to $70. Three cows consigned by Allan and Dorothy Martin, Listowel, averaging 1,277 lbs. sold for an average of $65.70 with sales to $68.25. There were 200 veal on offer selling from $75 to $87.45 to the high of $125. Three veal consigned by Don Walaga, Milverton, averaging 630 lbs. sold for an average of $107.91 with sales to $125. One veal consigned by Wayne Hoegy, Dublin, weighing 680 lbs. sold for $120.50. Five veal consigned by Doug Ward, Monkton, averaging 650 lbs. sold for an average of $108.74 with sales to $ 120. Lambs, 50 - 79 lbs., sold $108 to $156; 80 - 94 lbs., $101 to $123; and 95 lbs. and over; $85 to $98. Sheep sold $26 to $48. Goats sold $33 to $140. Fourteen lambs consigned by Rudy Schramm, Teeswater, averaging 49 lbs. sold for an average of $126.15 with sales to $156. Fourteen lambs consigned by Dave Watson, Belgrave, averaging - 69 lbs. sold for an average of $134.85 with sales to $135. Stockers: steers, 400 - 400 lbs., sold $110 to $140; 500 - 600 lbs., $110 to $130; 600 - 700 lbs., $100 to $115; 700 - 800 lbs., $95 to $105; and 800 lbs. and over, $85 to $100. Heifers, 400 - 500 lbs., sold $105 to $135; 500 - 600 lbs., $105 to $125; 600 - 700 lbs., $95 to $110; 700 - 800 lbs., $90 to $100; and 800 lbs. and over, $80 to $95. F arm 4-Hers begin baking club By Sarah McLellan Thirteen members and two leaders opened the Cranbrook 4-Hers new project, Batter Up, with the 4-H pledge. The meeting was held on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. After the pledge was recited, a "What's What?" game of baking utensils followed. We then proceeded to elect our slate of officers. They are: president, Kendra Fischer; vice president, Cass Boyd; secretary, Kerry Blake; press reporter, Sarah McLellan. The majority of the meeting was filled with the baking of veggie squares and two different variations of fudgy brownies. The meeting ended with the tasting of our creations and a drink. Along with the regular members* of our club, three new members joined. Welcome to Nikki Hallman, Nicki Lowe and Amber Park. NOV. 5 11:00 a.m. I think the answer is The North Huron 4-H Sheep Club represented the county at the Go-for-the Gold competition held at Central Huron SS on Oct. 22. though they were defeated by the eventual champion, Oxford County, in the semi-finals, the Huron team put forth a good effort. Volunteers from across the region assisted in both the judging and the scorekeeping at the event. Huron representatives were, from left: James McNaughton of Kippen, Simone Bleeker of Wingham, Laurie Podges of Goderich and Marilyn Van Den Elzen of Clinton. Former Seaforth resident and world and Olympic figure skating champion Lloyd Eisler Jr. .and his partner Isabelle Brasseur, will offi­ cially open the fair on Nov. 10 al the opening ceremonies. The Royal runs from Nov. 8 to 19. The Royal is known as one of Canada's premier family events and brings together new technology, agricultural products, livestock, commercial exhibits, winter garden show, horse show, feature attrac­ tions and education centres. One of this year's most popular attractions may be the Big Ben retirement lour booth. A show jumping horse who has claimed numerous awards throughout his career, Big Ben will officially retire on Nov. 19, but will be available for pictures and farewells through­ out the run of the Royal. The Royal Horse Show will draw competitors from Germany, Swit­ zerland, and the United Slates to Winter Fair challenge the Canadian equestrian team. The Royal is also proud to be hosting the Canadian National Hereford Show, drawing an esti­ mated 300 quality animals from across the continent.
