UCW plans new venture Aiding education Bonnie Shannon, left, and Susan Howson check over some of the books Blyth PS is donating to a worthy cause. Through contacts in the United Church, the school will be sending no longer needed textbooks to Belize, Central America (formerly British Honduras). The books will be used by Guatemalan and El Salvadoran immigrants who are now in need of schooling through the Mennonite Community in Spanish Lookout. Blyth UCW met Oct. 20 with 15 members present. Bemice Chambers and Dorothy Daer were in charge of the devotions. Elva Brown was pianist. Thanksgiving was the theme and three hymns pertaining to Thanksgiving were sung. Readings and poems were given by Mrs. Chambers and Mrs. Daer. The offering was received by Mrs. Chambers and dedicated by Mrs. Daer. She read a Halloween poem remembered by many members from years ago, then closed this part of the meeting with a prayer. Roll call was answered with a verse containing either the word temple or church. Bonnie Shannon presided over the business. Thankoffering Service will be on Nov. 6 at 2:30 p.m. Kari Johnston will be speaking on her experience of living in Africa. November also brings a new venture "Blest be the Tie that Binds". Men are invited to bring an old tie with a donation inside. Proceeds will go to the church debt and the ties will be made into a wall hanging. Another new venture "Woman's Day Out" will be held April 22. This will be at the Memorial Hall and suggestions are welcome as to the program. At the moment a Silent Auction and Fashion Show are planned. Cenetta Bainton and Nellie Mason are the new members of the visitation committee. The study, conducted by Mrs. Shannon was a continuation of looking at the meaning of the UCW purpose with its key words - Witness, Fellowship and Service and deciding how activities relate to these. It was felt that after this study there might be some of the present allocation of funds the members might like to change. Following the UCW Benediction lunch was served. The luncheon committee was comprised of Elva Brown, Bea Chambers, Ruby Pattison and Evelyn Caldwell. Locks thwart thieves A locked door thwarted a bur glary attempt at a Blyth residence on Sunday. Wingham OPP said that unknown culprits entered the garage of the residence owned by Lenore Davidson of Blyth, through a window. After trying the door and another window, which were both locked, the culprits were unable to enter the home. They searched Mrs. Davidson's car, but left without taking anything. In last week's issue of The Citizen dated Oct. 19 under "Legion Donates" it should have read zone commander John MacDonald presented representa tives Bill Bearss and Brian Bell with a plaque in recognition of the Dominion Dart Championship.
