Conflict of interest bill irks councillors A new conflict of interest bill for councillors, Reeve Tom Tomes of municipal councillors is unfair to Stephen Twp. told Huron County council Oct. 6. Reeve Tomes said he worried many people running for council this fall don't know the ramifica tions of the proposed legislation. Successful candidates have 60 days after election to present a list of their assets and liabilities, and those of their immediate family. This is a public-document and anyone can ask to see it. For reeves, they must not only file the statement with their local municipality, but at the county level. Reeve Bill Mickle of Exeter, Number 1 Helen Gowing, Blyth's Citizen of the Year, was presented with a plaque by Sheila Richards, left, representing The Citizen. Mrs. Gowing was selected earlier this year for her dedication to and service with the community. vU&efflX. By John Schedler By this time one would have assumed that MGM had used just about every interesting bit of footage in their vast film library, but That’s Entertainment III ***1/2 (MGM/UA) proves they still have much more. The studio was home to some of the best musicals ever made and this wonderful compilation features selections from over 100 films plus behind-the-scenes footage and outtakes including an outrageous and politically incorrect number with Joan Crawford in blackface. Fascinating! (Rated G) The special limited edition laserdisc version features an additional 25 minutes of footage not available on videocassette. While we're on the subject of musicals Fox video is offering a newly restored 30th anniversary edition of My Fair Lady **** (Fox - $29.95). This movie has improved with age and it's a joy to see a superb cast that includes Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway and Wilfred Hyde White delight us again. The new film-to-tape transfer is from the original 70mm negative and includes some bonus footage, but unfortunately the standard tape version is available only in pan and scan which means two thirds of the film's original widescreen image is missing. For those who want My Fair Lady in widescreen your only choice is to shell out a considerable amount of extra cash for either a special boxed edition tape ($89.95) or laserdisc set ($190.00) which comes with not only the film, but a bunch of worthless junk as well. I really think this box set nonsense has gone too far. (Rated G) In other new releases, director Spike Lee takes an affectionate look at 1970s family life in Crooklyn **1/2 (MCA/Universal). This film is amiable enough, but the story only comes into focus in the last third when one of the children played by Zelda Harris is sent to live with relatives. While Crooklyn is still worth a rental, I was expecting more considering Lee's previous work. (Rated PG-13) Among the new and unpreviewed releases are Trapped In Space (Paramount) the story of a space shuttle on a voyage to Venus which is struck by a meteor. With only enough oxygen left for one person, the crew’s only choice is suicide or murder. (Rated PG-13) The family adventure, White Fang 2: Myth of The White Wo//(Disney) follows a wolf dog and his master as they attempt to stop the disappearance of local caribou. (Rated PG) The Silence of the Hams (C/FP) is a Flaked Gun-like spoof about a police officer who uses a notorious criminal to help him find a psychotic killer. The cast includes Dom Deluise, Billy Zane and Joanne Pacula (Rated PG-13) In Monkey Trouble (Alliance) a precocious young girl (Thora Birch) befriends a trouble-making monkey while trying to keep him a secret from her parents. I gave the ladies a tour of Huronlea and the Highland Apartments. The ladies then held their meeting in the apartment dining room. It was a pleasure to have everyone present at the meeting to see our Home in Brussels. All the regular monthly programs were held at the regular times - the old tunes with Phyllis Mitchell, Hymn Sing Devotional, crafts and cooking and bingo. We appreciate the volunteers providing us with these regular monthly programs. The Sunday Church Services were held at 2 p.m. Many thanks to Rev. John Vaudry, Brussels, Rev. John Neilson, Wingham, Rev. Cam McMillan, Brussels for leading the services for us. If you would like to know what is going on at Huronlea and would like to attend, please feel free to get one of our monthly calendars. We are always looking for volunteers for the home. If you should have fancy cups and saucers or cream and sugar sets that you would like to donate to Huronlea, please leave them at the main office or give to me. We would like to wish Joe Cooper a special 100-year-old birthday wish. "Hats off to Joe". president of the Association of Municipalities of Ontario, said the legislation means that in a future election a new candidate doesn't have to give out any personal infor mation but can use the information on file by an incumbent, against him. Reeve Mickle said he had met with the Minister of Municipal Affairs and "The thrust of this (leg islation) doesn't seem to be at the ministerial level, it's at the staff level." Reeve Tomes pointed out that under the legislation if a councillor declares a conflict of interest he must leave the room and isn't allowed to have anyone speak on his behalf on such things as zoning changes or minor variances in the neighbourhood that affect his prop- erty. "Everybody else is talking about their rights. We don't have those rights as an elected person."
