Mennonites hear testimonies of thanksgiving Thanksgiving was celebrated at Brussels Mennonite Fellowship, beginning with a breakfast feast at 9 a.m. Instead of the regular Sunday School classes, inter- generational Thanksgiving activi ties took place, following the breakfast. At 10:30 the congregation gathered in the chapel for worship. Suvany, Manivan and Phailop Larprom provided special music and led the congregational singing. Thelma Steinman was worship leader, and gave a children's story. Phailop Larprom, Lucy Hesse, and Darren Hemingway each gave testimonies of Thanksgiving. Phailop expressed thanks for God directing his family to Brussels, from a refugee camp when he was a toddler. He mentioned that 97 per cent of the people living in his native Thailand are Buddhist and he is thankful to be living in a Christian area and also gives thanks for the numerous ways God works in his life, at home, at school, at youth group, at church. Lucy is especially thankful for God's forgiveness in her life. Darren marvels at the ways God works in his life as well. Thought of the week: If we pause to think, we have cause to thank. Pastor Tom Warner preached from Philippians 4: 4-9 on Sunday, Oct. 16. Joy and peace were the focus of his message. Happiness is only on the surface but joy runs deep and is not affected by surface problems. One can experience pain, and have joy although happiness is missing. We should not assess ourselves or others on happiness, but on the basis of joy. Joy, not happiness, is the fruit of the spirit. The Philippians had reason to be sad and upset. They were faced by adversaries. Doubts and fear brings an element of faith. Joy and peace, are fruits of the spirit which come from faith. Joyfulness in the midst of terror and anxiety is not logical but is an element of faith, when one suffers for the glory of God. B.J. deJong was worship leader for the service. Anneke Pardys and Bev Brown also participated. Thelma Steinman, Nancy Elliot- Greenwood were in charge of the congregational singing. Andrea Hiller played the piano for the offertory and Pat Peitrek led the children's singing. The ladies' monthly fellowship gathering took place on Tuesday evening. The ladies met at the 5R's Thrift Shop for the first part of the meeting, then at the church for the remainder.
