ORG plans campaign Ontarians for Responsible Gov ernment (ORG) are not resting after a small victory (concerning high way signs) at Queen's Park in Toronto. The group's latest plan is a direct attack on Bob Rae and his govern ment, through the use of a radio campaign and 70 billboards. The billboards, to be placed in every NDP riding in Ontario will feature slogans such as a picture of a flyswatter then states Kills Flys; mousetrap, Kills Mice and Bob Rae, Kills Jobs. The radio blitz will follow a theme used two years ago with the fictional Buffalo Business Boost ers. Mr. Rae will be honoured for his lifetime achievement, "If Bob Rae wins, you lose." The ORG is a non-partisan group which campaigns for more respon sibility in government. The group says the NDP argues that they inherited a recession, but so did the rest of Canada and Ontario is lag ging behind in the recovery. The government claims great success with job creation, but only 47,000 were created through jobs- Ontario. At the same time, 200,000 fewer people are employed and the welfare rolls have almost double, says ORG. ORG states several ways for the government to get the economy under control: privatize non-profit housing, balance budget legislation, massive tax reductions, abolish funding to special interest groups, scrap wasteful programs such as junior kindergarten and eliminate expensive, job-destroying programs like pay equity and employment equity. They have made one wise deci sion, the planned toll road Highway 407, says ORG executive director Thom Corbett. However, they should reduce the gasoline tax by using the toll road money for devel opment and maintenance. The new campaign is scheduled to begin this fall. THE CANADIAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE By Sam Bradshaw District Co-ordinator Ontario winter wheat producers will have the opportunity to use a new toll-free telephone service to insure their crop this fall. The phone number is 1-800- CROP-INS (1-800-276-7467). Producers tell the operator their planted acreage and choice of coverage level, and they will immediately be told what their premium cost will be. A premium invoice will then be sent to the producers, who have until Nov. 10 to pay it either by mail or at any chartered bank. A Liquid Manure Application Systems Conference has been developed with the assistance of OMAFRA, Northeast Regional Agricultural Service, Soil Conser vation Service, Cornell University and equipment dealers. The conference, set for Dec. 1 and 2, will feature 25 experts to discuss topics such as the principles of planning, designing and manag ing liquid manure systems for large volume operations, equipment selection, environmentally respon sible handling and land application issues. The Rochester Marriott Thruway Hotel in Rochester, New York is the setting for the conference and the registration fee is $145 U.S. prior to Nov. 14 and $175 U.S. after that date. "In the meantime, questions regarding other crops should be directed to district co-ordinators." During the first week of October, winter wheat producers who were insured last year received a Final Acreage Report by mail. They have had the choice of either using the new toll-free number or the mail to enrol their winter wheat and establish their coverage. In either case, the application deadline is Oct. 31. If mail is the preferred method, producers must fill out the Final Acreage Report and return it with the premium payment post-marked no later than Oct. 31. Premium cheques can be post-dated to Nov. 10. Producers enroling by mail cannot pay their premium at the bank. Winter wheat producers must contact the Crop Insurance Commission if they want to insure their crop or to cancel insurance, or if they are not growing any winter wheat this year. It is important that a grower let the Commission know if he or she is not planting winter wheat in order to maintain any premium discount earned for future years.
